  • Mockup, enemy of the state...first song using samples

Hey, this is a little piece which is from Enemy Of The State composed by Trevor Rabin and Harry Gregson-Williams and arranged by me.... I wanted to prove to everyone that if you're looking for hollywood strings. They are all over the place...EWQLSO, VSL, GOS, sonic implants anyone....you don't need to do anything to achieve this(teqnically, I know I didn't)....As a lot of people have said, it's all in the composition.

I used Gigasound, the ultimate string collection. The patch: 01 Violins (22) - U.S. Tuning(f layer slow)....I find the fast attack sounds useless. But I'll learn more about that when I compose....I have barely made anything with samples....

You can hear that I am lacking of electric percussion and synth bass/pads.
I really wish I've had them for my own compositions. Now that I'm listening to the song it's really lacking of everything [:D] oh well....keep in mind that it's my first song

  • That sounds really good Audun. The piano sound works very well at the end. I like the reverb too; it sounds just about right.

It's not lacking anything much to me. Well done.

  • good to hear, thank you..... Do you know or anyone else where composers get their sounds from? [:D] We live on the same planet, but where are the sounds everyone else uses? (like this song, those hi hat thingys that goes nuts and that bass synth)....I'm going to buy albino, which is a synth module or something...
I didn't mean my composition of it, the original one.

Any suggestions of good synths, pads, electric percussion etc.?

The most helpful people on the planet is right here on the forum, some of you are living your dreams composing without problems with quality sounds for movies and games. I envy you all, I wish I already had a large sound library [*-)]

Thats no problem Audun. It's good. No worries.

We live on the same planet? Are you sure? [:D]

    Lots of questions there Audun.

Albino. Yes. I have that. It's very good and is probably mostly used by musicians that like dance/trance style music. However, there are other sounds that are good for the film score type stuff.

So what kind of libraries do have at the moment then Audun? That would probably help to know first, and then the other guys could come in and make suggestions. No need to envy anyone either. Most of us are assholes, so don't worry about all that.

    Later

    Paul

  • "Most of us are assholes"
    [:D] hehehe.

Haven't seen any assholes yet though [:D]

    I have: VOTA
    Giga Ultimate String collection
    STORM DRUM
    SAM horns,trumpets and trombones
    ADRENALINE
    QL Rare Instruments
    Drum Kit From Hell SUPERIOR
    Early Patches (akai)
    Hardcore Bass
    I'm forgetting something.....

What do you have? Does albino have any bass synths?....I need spectrasonics trilogy. Haven't tried it yet...as well as stylus...

But isn't there any electric perc. and bass synth programs that are better than those two? or just as good?

  • OK Audun. So that's what you have at the moment. Good. So the next useful bit of information would be to mention what sort of music you want to write?

  • Well anything...rap, hip hop, rock, reggea, jazz, orchestral(I have over 700 ideas and short tracks saved on a synthesizer ready to be made/remade with real sounds).....but the most important are orchestral music, with added sounds such as synth bass and electric perc....when I need it.

Every sound you could imagine coming out of the studios of media ventures is highly wanted by me.

I composed music for a short film recently and I didn't have any electric percussion. there are some in adrenaline but I didn't have time to look for the sound I wanted....

I usually compose action music... here's a intro song for the movie that didn't fit in and wasn't used at all.

  • i mockuped the general maximum theme of gladiator soundtrack, if you want to take a look , it's here : http://annecywebtv.free.fr/maximums-theme.mp3 (i couldn't do as powerful as the original soundtrack, there is only a horn ensemble playing here whereas it's doubled with trombones/another horns group and big percussion in gladiator)
i'm always surprised by the versatility of VSL, can do powerful sound or very subtle melodic lines.

  • That was really cool, it sounds like you hit the "wrong" notes sometimes but that's because the other instruments aren't there. Good job(would be cool if you tried to make the other instruments too, but it's very hard and takes time)...do you have more mockups Carter?

If anyone else has songs post them please...

  • if you are interested here's the patch i used

  • Where was I? I got side tracked. [[;)]]

  • you asked about what kind of music I made... I wondered about where to find electric percussion and bass synths that was as good or maybe better than trilogy and stylus.

I would also like your opinion on my suitcase intro

Well I think your suitcase intro sounds very well mixed. The pan pipe type sound is a bit up front and played like a keyboard player would play it, if you get my meaning. But overall, it sounds fine to me, given this particular genre. This is the thing you see Audun. If you want the strings and lead instruments to sound as realistic as possible, you will need to get an orchestral library like VSL with the legato function. I am the same myself, and can't go forward until the Mac arrives, by which time, I'll probably be dead. I'm using First edition with no perf tools, because I got caught out when Apple bought Emagic. I like using Logic, therefore I've had to wait. That's life.

Anyway, I don't know what your finances are like and it's none of my business. But, I would suggest a lib like the VSL Opus 1 with the pref tools. That would take care of the orchestral side of things and you could add to it as and when you needed to.

For pads (regarding this genre - suitcase MP3) - you can't go wrong with Atmosphere. I use it and love it. It has a patch called Hollywood Strings! [:P]

For Bass - Trilogy is excellent. I use it. So many basses to choose from. [H]

Stormdrums you have and everything I've heard so far sounds excellent with Stormdrums. I will get it. Stylus is being updated soon, I understand.

You may wish to look at the Moog plugin for other types of basses. Very good sound. And maybe FM7. [H]

Albino we covered already and it's very good. Also, for your different genre's, you may wish to look at Absynth 2. Weird and wonderful! [[:|]]

The SAM libraries are excellent, and you already have them I see.

You should be able to make a pretty good sound with that lot. I assume that you are waiting for GS3 (patiently of course - never get excited) and I understand there will be some libraries incuded, such as excerpts from VSL. Plus Gigapulse!

So the only thing left is to rob a bank! [I]

This is my personal opinion you understand, and this department takes no responsibilty for any misunderstandings and will self-destruct in 10 seconds anyway. [:D]

    Good luck and bests

    PR

Edit: For goodness sake try them out first Audun. Don't just take my word for it. Phew! Nearly forgot to say that! [H] Guilt attack coming on!

Hahhaa! No need DG. I have the patience of Job.

And a very Happy Birthday to you today. So how old will that be? 35?

    [:)]

  • Thanks for comments Paul, you've been really helpful. I was about to buy opus 1 but then suddenly this gs3 thing with included vsl stopped me. I have a budget on 2000$ right now, if I want or need something.

I am also tempted to buy a 19" lcd screen but I don't NEED it, but it's so cooool [H] and big...[:D] I have a 17" right now.

It's just a matter of time before I have atmosphere, trilogy and stylus(rmx too) I don't even need to try them, I've heard enough good about them. Nice demo's too. But you are right Paul, robbing a bank wouldn't be a bad idea. [:D]

$2000!!! Oh Audun! You haven't stolen The Scream have you? Take it back mate. Take it back. [:D]

On second thoughts, I'l take it off you for $5000. I'm into alienation at the moment. [[;)]]

    My pleasure.

    Pretty close actually [[:|]]

    DG

  • I would suggest that Audun needs another dealer to sell his "Scream" - if he only got $2,000 he was ripped off. Really Audun you need to be a little more careful whom you sell to. I know you're impatient to get Opus 1 but you've got to have more patience and get yourself a good deal.

  • Speaking of stealing paintings...weird that you brought it up. Someone DID steal paintings from our munch museum in norway. [*-)] I don't know if they took the scream but they grabbed a few others. Happened a few days ago.

But hey, I'm innocent. I promise! [6] muahaha
Is someone interested in buying a picture I painted the other day? [H]

    [:D] [:D]
