Josquin des Prez
I would like some feedback on the following apparently simple piece. http://redmist.mycloudnas.com/public/mille%20regretz%20v7.mp3 The individual parts were tracked with an EWI in combination with a number of Vienna instruments. In my ears, the parts are balanced, but the french oboe sounds horrid and the other parts need clearly more separation (is that masking?). Some direction is greatly appreciated. Thanks, martijn

Hi Martijn, very nice work, for a very beautiful piece of Josquin des prez!!. You say that you use EW instruments and Vienna. It is always difficult to mix theses soundbanks because EW records are wet (too much ?) and vienna are dry ones, and so, it is hard to find the good reverb for all. I think you will win precision with little less reverb. You have a little problem of resonance in low frequencies at left channel too. Use the equalizer to fix this problem. To enhance the oboe, use a compressor. After this, you will hear the instruments more separeted, may be too much : narrow the stereo spectrum if you need. Philippe

Hi Martijn,
a beautiful interpretation of Josquin's piece.
By talking about "EWI", did you mean Samples from EastWest libraries, or did you use the AKAI wind controller to play Vienna instruments?I often have the same problem (much more with the oboe than with other instruments) when recording tracks played on the keyboard (I don't have a MIDI wind controller).
To avoid a squeaky and artificial sound I need some editing on the controller curves for velocity crossfades. What I've played live is never usable "as is". Maybe with other instruments, but not with the oboe. That means trying again and again... but that way you could get more realism especially for the oboe. All other instruments in your recording sound really good!Klaus

Hi Philippe, Thanks for your remarks and observations. You have given me some valuable new pointers and insights in what to listen for. The amount of reverb is indeed the main culprit (it is so easy to go wrong there). Reducing the amount is less straightforward and requires some level setting. The parts are indeed more intelligible. With respect to the stereo spectrum reduction, I do not have a feeling for the amount, but I assume the idea is to get a tight ensemble performance rather than a number of separate instruments. Regards, Martijn

Hi Klaus, Thanks. You really solved the harsh/artificial oboe timbre problem for me. I solely modulate expression, and not velocity crossfading. I have some work to do :) My EWI sentence is indeed confusing. I meant to say that I used an akai electronic wind controller to record vienna instruments. Regards, Martijn
