  • Basic question about Vienna Instruments Pro

I have a question concerning Vienna Instruments Pro. I'm currently using Vienna Ensemble to load matrices, etc for use with Sibelius.I don't understand how V I Pro works with Sibelius and Vienna Ensemble.

My question is: if I have V I Pro does it replace Ensemble? Is it just a matter of loading the instruments for playback (16 instruments in Ensemble) in a single instance of V I Pro? Or does V I Pro somehow fit between Ensemble and the Sibelius playback configuration in the software chain? The Vienna videos don't make this clear; they jump into Pro's features but don't explain this basic question for someone making this change. So if I'm writing a string quartet instead of loading four instruments into one instance Ensemble I load them into one instance of V I Pro? Does V I Pro also have 16 slots for 16 instrument matrixes?

If anyone could clarify this I would be grateful. Thanks.

  • I think you are confusing VI PRO with VE PRO.

VI PRO is a substitute for VI ("VI" in Sibelius Playback Configuration shows as "VSL"), the interface used for each instrument. As I understand, VI PRO has more features and can hold more patches per matrix cell, but can only load one instrument per instance (unless you mix the instruments by pitch range like is done in the video).

VE PRO is the substitue for VE, which acts as host for several VI or VI PRO instances. I believe the main difference between the two is that VE PRO can host third party libraries as well.

In this sense, VI PRO fits exactly where VI fits in your setup, being loaded inside VE or VE PRO one time for each instrument.
