  • Detache short - no sound ID in Sibelius?

How do I trigger a "detache short" on cello (or any string) in Sibelius 5.4, using the latest VE? I tried to create a dictionary entry in Sibelius for the technique text "detache short" which would trigger a Sound ID change, but I can't find "+detache short" in the Sound ID list, only "+detache". Any tips? (While you're at it, I'm also wondering how to get the staccato articulations to trigger the regular staccato patch, not the perf-rep spiccato, as it seems to be doing by default.)

  • Hello phsupertonic!

You are right, that there is no extra command for the detache short patch in the "VE Special Edition PLUS" sound set. The easiest way to trigger this articulation is by creating the "detache" command and adding the following MIDI command as a second Technique Text entry: ~C1,127
This command will make VI switch from cell A2 to cell C2, where the detache short patch is loaded.

The perf-rep staccato (or spiccato) patches are played by default for staccato notes, because they sound more natural with repeated notes than the normal staccato patches. If you want to use the normal staccato patch instead of the performance repetition, use the keypad’s staccato mark and add the Technique Text command “1”. To use it, you have to add the following entry to your Sibelius dictionary: Staff Text/1: Sound ID change “+1” Until start of next note. If you are using the latest Vienna Symphonic Library House Style this command is already included in the dictionary.

  • Thanks so much, Andi, that is very helpful!

  • I was trying this today - didn't work for me... What am I doing wrong? I wrote "detache" as technique over the string staff and VE played the detache samples, but as I added "~C1,127" as another technique text, it didn't change to the C cell in VE... Does this work with Sibelius 6? I imported the VSL Style sheet also... Thanks for help! balz

  • Hello balz!

Yes, that should work with Sibelius 5, 6 and 7.

Did you load the Special Edition PLUS sound set on the Playback Devices menu?
Did you load the according PLUS matrix for your string instrument (the one with the "+" at the end of the name)?

If that's not the problem, maybe it helps placing the "detache" command a bit earlier than the "~C1,127 command.

  • hello andi Now that's what I call support! The last advice made it - just placed the ~C1,127 command e bit after the detache command and it worked out. Thanks a lot! best balz

  • Hello Andi, I have some problem with triggering the short staccato (and many other as well), I've tried everything as mentioned above, but still doesn' switch. When the "Y" controller type was changed to keyswitch at the VI Pro, it worked fine, but all the other samples used the C cells only. What should I try? Thanks Grapemus-t

  • Hello Grapemus-t!

The Special Edition and SE PLUS sound sets only work correctly, when you use the original matrices. The matrices with the "+" at the end of the name are for the SE PLUS sound set. By changing your Y-axis controller, switches on this axis will not work anymore.

Do you use the "Vienna Symphonic Library" House Style?

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hello Andi, Yes I use the +matrices, and the Vienna S L. House Style as well. My be something wrong with the sound set version or the House Style version. I can't check if a newer version of these exist, bcause I've still login problems, the only thing I able to use on the website is the forum. If I try to use any other features I always dropped out, it says I have to login. Then I try to log in again, but it says: I already logged in. I1ve ent e-mails to Stephen, he promised somebody looking after, but no solution till today. Best Grapemus-t

  • Hello Grapemus-t!

The "1" command to switch to the normal staccato patch instead of the staccato-repetition only works with the SE PLUS sound set provided on our homepage ("VE Special Edition PLUS") and not with the one that comes with Sibelius ("VSL Ensemble Special Edition PLUS"). The sound set can be downloaded here:

If you can write messages on the forum, you are in fact logged in. If you can't see any sound set at the provided link, please let me know.

    Best,
    Andi
