  • Using MIR to reverberate an audio signal: would Bidule VSTi x64 do the "insider" job?...

I'm finding MIR amazing, but compared to an Effect (like Altiverb for instance) I found the limitation of hosting only VSTi:

in effects/Altiverb you can take any sound (e.g. an audio recording dry enough, like a voice, a Vocaloid file, an acustic instrument recording etc.) and "place it on the stage" beside the VSTi.

    - I'm wondering if it exist a way for doing it in MIR SE

    - I'm wondering if MIR is hosting Bidule x64 VSTi and if the audio channel you can open in Bidule should be processed by MIR like an instrument.

Any comments, answers and contribution is wellcome. Thanks in advance.

    Fabio

  •  I don't know anything about MIR SE but with Mir I process audio imported via Kontakt. Consider that kontakt imported files have not the right impulses as the Vienna instruments, but I like it.

  • Hi & welcome Fabio,

Thanks for your friendly words and your interest in Vienna MIR.

Vienna MIR and AltiVerb are very different products with very different underlying concepts. MIR is not another reverb, but a holistic approach to the realization of virtual orchestral music. Think of it as a three-dimensional spatial mixing console. To work properly, MIR needs to "know" a lot about the incoming signals - that's why we invested enormous amounts of time to investigate aspects like the directivity profiles of most instruments we ever sampled, for example.

That said, we know that many MIR users want to combine Vienna Instruments with other sound sources (which can't be treated by MIR like Vienna Instruments, as Sergino pointed out correctly). The first step was the option to use 3rd party VSTi's within MIR, although with a reduced feature set.

The next step will be the possibilty of routing _any_ audio signal into MIR. For us this actually means a complete re-write of the MIR engine. The result of this development will be a new application that offers many (right now we call it Vienna MIR Pro). But this will take some time.

For now, your idea with Bidule as VSTi within MIR is worth testing. Be aware, though, that you might run into latency issues (amongst others).

    Kind regards,

  •  Thanks all for kind answers.

I understand that the purpose of MIR is hosting Vienna instruments, and the value of the accurate custom IR programming.

By the way additional audio or Vocal tracks need to melt in the mix, and nothing is better than the same IR to create the illusion.

    Here my findings:

    - using the VI custom preset for similar instruments give pretty good results (e.g. Flute for 3rd party flutes, Violin for violins etc.)

    - testing Bidule I recall that no real time audio input is possible with a VSTi instance. Then Kontakt is enough as sample player.

    - Kontakt output is treated to satisfactory ambience, without excessive effort, just a bit of tweeking, mixing in a believable way with original VI.

    - The playback is easy to sync with other MIDI input, if the response of the VI is not too different from Kontakt as in my DAW seems to be.

Looking forward to next developments, cheers

    Hello Fabio

I recorded my voice within my Daw - syncroniced to the midi signals which controlled the VIs later on inside MIR.

Then I opened MIR and all the VIs for the Orchestra

Then I opened HALion (the SamplePlayer of Steinberg) within MIR and loaded the audiotrack with the voice on key C3.

Now I simply had to trigger (starting) this audiotrack by pressing C3 in the correct moment.

Further tasks: Adjusting the volume and the natural wet/dry balance of HAlion compared to the other instruments (VIs)... Voilà!

Singing in the Grosser Konzertsaal as a non professional > fantastic...

    All the best
