  • VE Pro Mixer Channel naming

Hi... I'm busy trying to iron out a few niggly things in VEPro. Here's a list of stuff I can't figure out... I have read through multiple forums and found a few good hints, but the following are flummoxing me big-time.

    1. What's the best way to set up Automation in Logic so that the Instruments on the VEPro servers are able to process it correctly?

I'm struggling particularly with Volume automation... CC7 messages on individual MIDI tracks affect the output of the entire VE Instance.

I've tried applying a Transformer to the Multi-Instrument in the Environment so that CC7 messages within Logic are sent to the VEPro server on CC27. (As suggested by Tobias on his Novatlan tutorial: http://www.novatlan-sound.de/downloads/tutorials/tutorial_orchestral_template.pdf - which was very useful btw.) But I then have to go into each VEPro instrument and assign CC27 to Volume (or Amplitude/ whatever setting controls the Instrument output level.) This only works in a few customizable instruments. RealStrat for instance doesn't seem to accept anything but CC7 as a Volume control.

CC11 (Expression) seems to work on a few Instruments but not on others.

    2. Is there any way of custom naming Channels in the VEPro Mixer?

I'm referring particularly to Input Channels. I have a couple of Multi-Out EXDrummer Instruments on my 32-bit server, and have assigned individual EZDrummer outputs to separate Inputs in the VEPRo Mixer, so that I can put separate Waves effects on the BD, SD, HH etc. There doesn't seem to be a way to name the Input tracks... Perhaps it isn't possible...

Question for Vienna Ensemble Pro engineers:

Would it be possible to create a MIDI settings option in each VEPro Instance/Project where we can globally change/filter incoming MIDI messages from the host so that they are received correctly by the instruments in the Project? I believe that this is an AU limitation?

Thanks for your help and for an awesome product. It has really opened up the 7 lazy processors on my MacPro.

    Peace.

All VE Pro channels can be renamed by double clicking the title of the channel strip at the left side of the VE Pro window.

  • Thanks Karel. Don't know why I didn't notice that! Doh!

I was experimenting with this issue today in a new template I'm working on. The trouble is that Logic (stupidly?) intercepts MIDI CC7 & 10 to control the fader and panner of instrument channelstrips without then passing those CCs to the AU plugin. As far as I can tell, there are no options in Logic for this (Apple software developers take note! This is a frustrating behaviour for anyone working with multi-intruments!). As batmandela said, a simple CC transformer built into VEP at the instance level would be extremely handy to get around this issue.

What I have done is to use "external MIDI multi-instruments" to trigger VEP, running via 2 MIDI transformers within the Logic environment and then routed to the MIDI input for the instrument channelstrip containing the VEP AU instance. The first MIDI transformer changes CC7 -> CC25 and the second changes CC10 -> CC26. I've then written a Kontakt KSP multi-script to do the reverse once the CC data arrives inside Kontakt (CC25 -> CC7 and CC26 -> CC10). As I only use Kontakt on my slave machine, this worked great! Now, I have individual panners & faders for each MIDI channel inside my Logic arrange window, and these adjust the panners and faders of each Kontakt patch individually making it really easy to balance my slaved kontakt patches on a per cue basis :) :) :)

I'll post some more information (and pictures and probably a project file as well as the KSP multiscript) about exactly how to use this workaround in a new thread some time in the next week or so.

Hope the above info is of some use to someone.

  • I would like to RENAME MORE than 1 CHANNEL at the same time with AUTOMATIC INCREMENTATION as it is mentioned in VE PRO manual 1.5.1 page 25 at Special Features Channel Pane. But I really struggle to make it happen or I didn't get the feature. Please, anyone who successed from Vennia developement could tell how to do it? I quote the manual: When editing channel names, hold down [Alt] and press [Enter] – all following channel names will be incremented Thanks a lot
