Imperial + MIR

hi, i need a little help on this. what is the best setting for vienna imperial being used in MIR? MIR has already listed imperial as instrument. but after changing the "source" to imperial MIR switches to "general purpose/cardoid" (even if i change it again to imperial) also any additional tweaking necessary? like turning off the reverb in imperial? thanks!

I would _definitely_ switch off the internal reverb of Vienna Imperial, unless you're heading for a special effect. Also, I would leave the stereo-width at 100%, because MIR is taking care for that.

The Boesendorfer Instrument Profile you are seeing in the instrument definition dialog is meant to be used with the smaller Vienna Instrument Boesendorfer, not the Imperial with its dedicated player software. Using a General Purpose profile for the Imperial is fine, like a broad cardiod, to mimic the effect of an half-opened lid.

thanks dietz, actually there are -besides of "Boesendorfer Imperial"- 3 additional instruments called "Vienna Imperial Close", "Vienna Imperial Distant" and "Vienna Imperial Player" (each with 6 characters). So i assumed MIR would get rid of the rest. anyhow thanks for the info about reverb/stereo width

Oh, of course!!! Did we already incorporate them ... sorry, I must have been confused when I assumed that those profiles were still unreleased. That comes from writing support-messages _without_ sitting in front of the audio workstation. My bad.

But in fact, those Profiles should work. I will test it later today and see what's going on.

:) but as i said MIR switches back to "general purpose" as soon as i choose Vienna Imperial as source (even if i first choose the source and then choose the instrument in the dialog box)

MIR offers for all VSTi instruments as default setting "general purpose". Vienna Imperial is defacto a VSTi and not a Vienna Instrument per design.

Anyway, it's the same procedere with Vienna Instruments, you have to choose the correct Instrument preset manually which are offered in the Preset list.

The only difference is, that for Vienna Instruments the very first Instrument Preset of the list is selected per default: 01 Strings / 01 Soloviolin

And for all other VSTis including Vienna Imperial the default selection is: 07 General Purpose /  C Cardiod).

So except for the Vienna Instruments solo violin you have to select your Instrument Preset always manually.

Hi again,

I just gave it a try - actually everything is fine. I think you got fooled by an - admittedly overzealous - attempt of MIR being extra-smart. 8-)

The Instrument Profiles for Vienna Imperial work nicely, and they remain loaded once you have chosen them. You can easily check that by looking at the picture on in the Instrument Channel. If it still shows the proper image, all is fine.

... what is fooling you is the fact that MIR suggests a General Purpose Profile as soon as the source instrument isn't a Vienna Instrument. Strictly spoken, the Vienna Imperial _isn't_ a Vienna Instrument in the sense of the word (as it relies on its own player engine), so this is why the Instrument Edit Window defaults back to the General Purpose Profile as soon as you open it again. But rest assured: It didn't load another profile as long as you didn't press OK ... I admit that this somewhat crude logic is something we will have to change. 8-)

Step-by-step:

- "Add" a new Instrument

- select Vienna Imperial as the source (... MIR now suggests a General Purpose Profile, as explained above)

- _now_ select the proper Profile, e.g. 04 Keyboards - 91Vienna Imperial Player

- press "OK" and  leave the Add/Edit Instrument window.

-  the Instrument Channel should show the image for the Vienna Imperial / Player Perspective.

i did exactly the same. what i was wondering is that MIR always switches back to general purposes/cardioid each time i click on "edit".

btw dietz, regarding an earlier thread of mine: MIR is doing fine on 6-core intel. no problems so far :)
