  • [SOLVED] PROBLEM : Sibelius 6 - VSL Special Edition Plus - Pizz Snap instead of Sustain/Legato

    I'm getting desperate on this:

I followed all instructions, but there might be a mistake somewhere...

My setup: Mac Pro, Mac OS 10.6.2, Sibelius 6, VSL Special Edition (Complete)

    I copied the VSL_House_Style_Sib6 to:

    Users\username\Library\Application Support\Sibelius Software\Sibelius 6\House Styles

    I copied the Soundset to:

    Users/your username/Library/Application Support/Sibelius Software/Sibelius 6/Sounds

Furthermore I followed the video tutorial step by step, tried to set up the following ensemble:

String Quartet - Matrices used: chamber vl + , chamber vl +, chamber va +, chamber vc +

Then try to enter notes - they're played as pizz snaps... Try to set "ord." as described in the manual "Optimizing Sibelius Playback v.1.2" - no effect.

Where's the problem? I've tried to set up Sibelius and VSL SE+ four times. No progress. :-(

Longing for help... Thanks in advance...

  • Hello Venedict X!

The String Quartet Manuscript Paper is for solo strings and you are using it for ensemble strings. This can't work because the Sibelius instruments for Solo Strings and Ensemble Strings have different Sound IDs.

Here is what you can do:
1.) Add the following instruments to your score: Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello
2.) Cut the content of your old staves and paste them to new ones. One after the other.
3.) Make sure that on the Manual Sound Sets page the Strings Ensemble programs are set and not the Solo Strings programs.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi,

Is there a difference between the Plus soundsets and the Standard sets? I've got similar problems namely with inconsistant playback. For instance, it sometimes happens that staccato stays staccato when I want it to be pizzicato.

    Thanks,

    Arnold

  • Hello Arnold!

Yes, there are differences between the Special Edition and the Special Edition PLUS sound sets. They are made for different matrices. For the Special Edition matrices you will need the Special Edition sound set and for the SE PLUS matrices you will need the SE PLUS sound set.

It may have various reasons if articulation changes do not work as expected. Most cases can be solved with the Trouble Shooting section of the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual. If you haven't done so yet, you can download it at the following location:
    http://vsl.co.at/en/68/141/460/576/655.htm

If you can't find a solution there, I will need some more details to help.
What instruments do you have in your score?
How many instances of Vienna Ensemble (VE) did you activate and which sound sets did you choose?
What settings did you make on the Manual sound sets page?
Which matrices did you load in VE?

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi,

The current instrumentation is as follows:

    Flute
    Oboe
    Klarinet in Bb
    Bassoon
    Horn in F
    Trumpet in Bb
    Trombone
    Mezzo-sopraan
    Tenor
    Harpsichord
    Celli
    Contrabasses

I use herefor 2 instances of Vienna Ensemble.
One additional instance for Reason to obtain other sounds, like the harpsichord. This last instance is via IAC bus 1.

The settings for each Manual sound sets are:
IAC bus 1 with a GM sound set.
Vienna Ensemble with a Vienna Ensemble Special Edition Plus sound set.
and another Vienna Ensemble (2) with a Vienna Ensemble Special Edition Plus sound set.

The last sound set contains actual Special Edition Plus Strings. The first doesn't contain any Special Edition sound sets but when I change that to the "normal" Special Edition all the playback goes wrong in the woodwinds (all the channels play the clarinet sound set)

The matrices I load in VE are like the given instrumentation divided over two VE instances.

I tried to get through the troubleshooting which fixed a few things, but still gives some trouble.
As said similary before - but in this particular case for instance: The celli start with detache. The there's a small passage with staccato notes whereafter I want to go to detache again. That doesn't work. There's no change.
However, when I introduce spiccato instead, it changes.

[edit 01] Oh, and after a slur it appears to change back to the former expression (which didn't sound in the measures before, but after that slur it pops up! Very strange...

[edit 02] One other thing I've discovered. There are 2 different sets by your manufacturing in the sound set folder.
VSL Special Edition, and VE Special Edition (both with the plus variant)
I use both now by means of experiment and indeed as stated in the troubleshooting guide staccato triggers the spiccato repetition set. Unfortunately the problem of program changes (or however it is called) isn't solved yet...

  • Hello Arnold!

I recommend changing the sound set of the first VE instance to Special Edition. Please notice, that after changing the sound set you will have to reassign the programs on the manual sound set page for this VE instance. I guess you didn't do that and that's why changing to the Special Edition sound set didn't work before.

By the way. There is a harpsichord included with the Special Edition. So you could also use that.

As for the Cello problem. Have you tried inserting the text command "ord." before changing back to detache? Sometimes the Sound IDs have to be reseted with this command before inserting a new command. Is this the only articulation that didn't change correctly?

    Best,
    Andi

  • Hey Andi,

No, when I switch to Special Edition the channels 1,2 and 3 become all clarinets... Even after reassigning the channels to the correct sound sets.
So, no that doesn't do the trick right now...

But the other work around you suggested about the cello works! (now I have to find away to hide this, for it is not really needed to appear in the score, but that's a Sibelius topic) But how about when I want to go from staccato to detache without rests, and thus space to place he ord.?

    Thanks so far!

    Arnold

  • Hello Arnold!

The Special Edition instruments becoming clarinets problem is a bit strange for me. I have never had such a problem, nor have I heard of it.

Hiding items like "ord." is pretty easy. Just mark it and press [CTRL]+[SHIFT]+h. On Mac it's [COMMAND]+[SHIFT]+h. There doesn't have to be a break in between. You can place the "ord." text between two notes.

    Best,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi!

Strangely enough, almost everything works now!

Thank you for your help and efforts!!!

Oh, before I forget; where can I find the harpsichord you mentioned in the Special Edition. I only find the Bosendorfer, Cembalo, Celesta and Organ.

    Cheers, Arnold

  • Hi Arnold!

Thanks for the feedback. Cembalo is the german word for harpsichord.

    Best,
    Andi

  • Hey Andi!

    Ai, that's odd, I didn't realize that...

    Thank you!

    Cheers once more, Arnold
