  • Latency/Timing issues between Logic 9 and VE Pro Server (32-bit)

    Hello,

I am having a recurring issue regarding my Logic sessions and timing with VE Pro Server (32-bit).

Here is a simplified example: I have a Logic project playing a simple drum beat with stock Logic instruments. I have Superior Drummer 2 loaded from within VE Pro Server. Superior Drummer is supposed to be playing a tambourine hit on the downbeat of every measure. 5 times out of 6, this works correctly, but every now and then, when I press 'play' in Logic, the tambourine hits coming from SD2/VE Pro are a tiny bit early(about an 8th note early at 170 BPM).

To correct this, I simply press 'stop' in Logic, and then 'start' again. In a broader context, sometimes this will cause all my orchestra samples to play a little bit early when the samples are being hosted by VE Pro Server. Simply stopping and restarting always fixes this. Like I said, it happens about 5 times out of 6. This is a further annoyance when doing a realtime bounce of the whole song from Logic, as when the VE Pro samples come in, they can be early.

Note: My memory is a little fuzzy right now, perhaps it is that all VE Pro samples hit a little bit late, not early. I'll have to do further testing to be sure.

I am using the latest build (4881) of VE Pro Server. This timing issue has happened with Superior Drummer 2 samples as well as samples from Kontakt 4. I am using Logic 9.1.1 32-bit (although this was happening on 9.1.0), with Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on an Intel Mac Pro.

Just wanted to point this issue out. If anyone else is having this issue, it would be good to hear of workarounds, etc.

EDIT: I have just confirmed that the samples play a bit EARLY, not late. This happens at 256 and 512 buffers in Logic.

    Thanks

  • Bump.

This is issue is extremely frustrating. About 50% of the time when I hit 'play' in Logic, all of my coupled VE Pro tracks will play a tad bit early.

For what it's worth, I have plug-in delay compensation in Logic set to "All."

    Can anyone help?

  • Hi,

as I already told you in my e-mail I can confirm latency problems with VE Pro with "hard-quantized" tracks in Logic 9 (it´s been investigated), but what exactly do you mean by "this will cause all my orchestra samples to play a little bit early when the samples are being hosted by VE Pro Server"? They are "earlier" compared to what?

If possible I´d also like to keep this an e-mail conversation because otherwise it can easily get confusing.

    Best regards,

    Maya VINSON

  • Hi, Just a confirmation I ran Superior and when playing my Kit all the notes are about a beat short. After "heavy quantizing" it sounds fine. I used "Low Latency Mode" to get decent realtime performance, but in Logic its a beat late. So in retrospect: Low Latency Mode = Audibly limited lag in realtime playing. Makes existing recording audibly early (a beat early), and impossible to add to a song this way. Normal Mode = Audible lag, and can't play Drumkit realtime to metronome or add drum tracks to a song this way. I had sent this to a friend so there's some frustration in my voice but shows off the issue. http://www.cybercussion.com/vault/movies/Logic/SuperiorLatencyVEPro.mov

  • Update, I ran superior by it self and the lag doesn't seem to be as bad until I mix Omnisphere and Kontakt on a 64bit Server instance. I'll keep testing.
