VE window freezing during Save/Save As..
Hi. Lately, I've been having problems with Vienna Ensemble, and it all has to do with the "Save" and "Save As" dialogue boxes (I guess they'd technically be Windows Explorer). After my somewhat-large orchestral template loads (mostly Vienna Special Edition with several downloaded add-ons), I of course have two Vienna Ensemble windows open and running, and want them out of my way. To do this, I have to close them, but am always forced to Save them (as .viframe files), even when I've made no changes to them. I've always overlooked this, and didn't mind having to do it each time things finished loading, but now, I'm almost never able to Save both of the setups without one of them freezing up and forcing a restart of the entire loading process (usually I have to close the eternally-frozen instance using Task Manager). This used to happen every so often, but was something I could cope with. It's now so regular that I can barely write anymore, and it's extremely frustrating. I'm on Windows XP x64 Pro, 12gb RAM (the template doesn't come what I'd call "close" to filling it up at all), a Core i7 and plenty of hard drives and space. I've tried everything from the latest as well as the older versions of VI and VE, the latest as well as the oldest Syncrosoft drivers I could find, and uninstalling/reinstalling VI and VE several times over. I don't know what else to do, but I'm nearly at a point where I might be forced to never use Vienna again, which is extremely saddening (and in the end, costly). If anyone has any insight whatsoever, including potential fixes or if the team could possibly look into whether or not something's up with the software, it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm afraid that I don't understand what you are trying to do, so perhaps you could answer some questions:
- Are you using the plugin version of VE?
- Which VE window are you trying to close? The actual GUI?
- Does it work when you only have a few samples loaded, or do you experience the same problem?

The Save/SaveAs dialog uses standard operating system functions. If they fail/freeze or similar, it is usually because of some odd networking setup, when Windows scans for some unconnected network devices it expects to be there. Usually it operates well again after a minute or so.
Is Vienna Ensemble the only software that causes the sluggish file operations dialogs for you?

It does actually occur regardless of how many samples are loaded, as the other day I unloaded a bunch of samples to reduce the entire setup to only a string quartet, and it still exhibited the same behavior. >>>>>>> "The Save/SaveAs dialog uses standard operating system functions. I do, however, recall that certain times this same window will take an extra second or two while Windows "looks for" my eSata drive (which has *no* samples on it; only use it for archiving) regardless of which app I'm using (not just VE). It's annoying to even think that Windows would stall me out due to having an eSata drive (could be drivers..who knows, but they're all updated), but that could well be the case. Why VE would freeze so bad I have to close it, I've no idea. Thanks so much, you two, and anymore leads or info from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

May as well jump in here as I have a "Save/Save As" freeze situation with Vienna Ensemble (latest update). I am running Konzerthaus Organ as two instruments in Ensemble, works OK when each keyboard (instrument) has it's own direct USB connection. However at the end of a session if I wish to Save or Save As the whole computer freezes (can't get Task Manager up).
Windows XP Pro SP3, 4GB memory, 500 GB hard drive, output through E-MU 0404 USB sound unit. Keyboards are Edirol PCR800 and M-Audio Axiom 49.
