  • Atheros Ethernet on Asus P5Q any good?

Just wondering if it makes sense replacing the onboard Atheros chip with something better.I'm using this board as a VE slave and got quite some pops and crackles. With the newest driver it got better but it's not perfect. First time I use VE through ethernet so I don't know other sources of problems.

    Any experiences with this NIC?

My main computer is built around a Asus P5W64-WS board with a Marvell Chip.

  •  For the record, I use a crossover network cable to connect the 2.

  • can't comment on Atheros (actually its the first time i heard about this vendor) - marvell, broadcom, intel, 3Com (besides others of course) is fine from my experience ... is it even gigabit?

cheaper NICs leave processing to the CPU and have less cache for the packets ... in most cases difference in price means difference in terms of quality ...

ps: in case you add an expansion card make sure the used PCI slot is not physically shared with your audio device .... check mobo manual

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.

same for me... I guess I just get an intel. It is Gigabit, by the way.

  •  So the Atheros does seem good enough. At least plugging in an Intel Gigabit PCI-E adapter didn't change anything...

  •  I'm missing a paper which describes all the necessary steps to properly setup a Vienna Ensemble setup. Including all possible culprits and problems.

Is there any finetuning of the network adapters meaningful (i.e. Jumbo frames etc.)

  •  In XP64 it seems to work perfectly. Any idea why XP32 might lead to problems? Can the/3GB switch cause problems like this?

from the system requirements: a working gigabit connection ... unfortunately we cannot support the basics of any possible configuration ... christian

  •  Ah, come on, I don't see any harm in collecting all the infos you spread around in this forum in one central FAQ.

By the way, I seem to have cured my problem by deleting registry entries of a faulty AHCI driver installation.

thanks for the update on network possibly interferring with some AHCI drivers ...

I don't think it was an interference. Just a problem of the windows/AHCI installation itself. I occasionally got some BSOD of this, as well. (iastor.sys)
