  • Patch Assign Page Display

I recently purchased the Vienna Special Edition and I am most impressed. Everything loaded fine, but my query has to do with the Patch Assign page. My Patch Assign page looks different than the Patch Assign page shown on the tutorial video. For example, my page has sliders instead of buttons for Pitch and Volume, and what I find most distressing is the fact that, no matter what I do, my page will not display the Horizontal and Vertical assign buttons that are clearly delineated on the tutorial video. I am able to circumvent this by opening the Control Edit page, but why must I take this route? I have downloaded the most recent version on this website so I don't think that is the problem. I know I have purchased the "bare-bones" VSL product, and I can live with the lack of articulations, but why am I lacking such a simple, yet useful, function? Am I failing to activate something?

    Thanks,

    James

  • Hi James. I haven't seen the tutorial video - what's its title? The VI's Patch Assign page doesn't have any buttons that I can see for Pitch and Volume. There's a slider for Pitch in the bottom LH corner; if you load a patch and hit 'Edit Cell' a row of seven sliders appear, one of which is Volume. The Horizontal and Vertical assign buttons are on the Control Edit page, not on the Patch Assign page. That's the way the VI works, you're not missing anything! HTH.

  • The video tutorials use the old versions of VI. the interface has been updated since then.

Give me 5 minutes to switch the studio on, and I'll give you a little tutorial on how to do this stuff.

  • OK, in order to control your Instrument there are three main pages that you need:

    1. Perform, which allows you to set your keyswitches to change between the vertically aligned matrices, and all other global controllers
    2. Patch assign, which is where you design your matrices
    3. Control Edit, which is where you set your controllers for use within your matrix.

Assuming that you have set up your requirements on the perform page, then your next port of call is the Patch Assign page, if you are not using factory matrices.

    1.  Click Patch assign. you are given one cell with which to drag and drop your patch. By dragging the right hand side of this cell you can increase the number of horizontal cells, and by dragging the bottom of this cell you can  increase the number of vertical cells.
    2. You then drag and drop, until you have filled as many cells as you like.
    3. Then click Control Edit. On this page you can set whether you are going to change articulation by Keyswitch, Controller, Speed etc. These are set independently for horizontal and vertical cells. The number of keyswitches that will appear is governed by the number of cells in your matrix.
    4. Once you have set your controllers/keyswitches, you should be ready to play.

  • Hi Conquer,

Thanks for the quick response. The video tutorial I am referring to is the one from this website that goes by the title Patches & Matrices. DG has kindly responded to my query and he notes that the video tutorial is from an older VI version, thus the minor changes in page layout. DG has also posted an excellent set-up sequence I will try in a short while.

Thanks again Conquer, and I'm impressed by the comraderie of this forum. Hopefully, as I get my head around VI, I will be able to contribute to the forum and help other VI users with issues they may have.

  • Hi DG,

Thanks for posting the excellent set-up sequence. I will try it shortly. The Patch Assign page on the tutorial appears to be all-encompassing regarding setting up controllers, keyswitches etc., yet, I would imagine that once you set up your own matrix or matrices and save them it will render my point moot. I will try to be more patient in the future and give VI a good go before I post any more questions. I have visited many other forum pages and have found them most useful.

Thanks again, and as I have stated above in response to Conquer's reply to my query, I am impressed by the comraderie of the VI forum.
