  • Downloading only with 16kb/s from VSL server?

Hey all, I just wanted to ask around if you guys also encountered that when downloading purchased software from the VSL server. I have a VDSL 25Mbit line and I definitely know that this is way ahead for almost every server, but I am currently downloading with 16kb/s only? So one package of 192 MB takes around 3 hours? On some packages I have 20, but on other only around 10kb .... shouldn't it be at least a bit faster or is it due to the weekend and probably lots of people buying? :)

  • sorry alex to hear about your downloading problem, but i think your line is specified as *up to 25 Mbit* by deutsche telekom AG ...

please try to not download several packages at once but one (or max. two) simultaneously and do not use a download manager.

  • Hey Christian, thanks a lot for your reply! I am also aware that 25Mbit is never max. speed, but somehow I have to describe my connection. It is just named like this :) I actually "only" get 22 but that's fair enough. I started downloading just one package and the max speed was just 30kb. If I wouldn't have used a download manager I would only have half of the files, because a few just lost connection and my line is rock solid (or to put it better ... when downloading other big files I don't have disconnects). In the end it didn't matter how many packages I was downloading I always got in between 10 or (in very rare moments) 30kb. Anyway, this isn't the worlds end for me and I guess for noone else neither, but I think compared to other servers (which are probably much more busy than the VSL server) it is very slow. I also had that back then when purchasing the SE strings ... so it is not the first time.

  • I'm downloading now with 375 - 425 kB/s at the moment,

(one CAB file with 192 MB needed less than 7 minutes for download).

So I don't think there is a limitation of the VSL server.

  • Thanks Herb, well I guess it's a country thing then. There are several posts here about slow connections so I guess it might be an issue of the several country networks which come together ... or it was just a sunday traffic jam :)

  • i'd rather assume it's a t-com thing ... the response time to your IP (which seems to be dynamic btw) appears to be within a usual range (~60 ms) ... any firewalls or virus checker doing a stateful inspection or similar? you could also try to reboot your modem/router if the uptime has been rather long ... sorry, but our server would give you up to 100 Mbit ...

  • Hey Christian, thanks for the hints. No I am on MAC and have no firewalls, virus software nor anything in between. It seems that the whole connection and everything which plays a role in between just have bad days sometimes :) I just tried again and had around 80kb/s .. but I will definitely check the modem again and do a reboot. Maybe it helps. Thanks!
