  • Help setting up VE3 network: Not seeing slave? Mac-Mac

    Hello everyone,

I'm stumped on how to get my main daw to view my VI slave. I'm not new to networking computers (run Midi over Lan & VNC between these computers just fine) but for whatever reason the Vienna Ensemble doesn't see my slave! I have read the manual multiple times, and still dont get what I'm doing wrong. Here is what I'm doing...

    1. Use Directory manager on Main Daw to make sure no Vienna Instruments are being accessed (as I want to access all from the slave)
    2. Plug in Key into main G5 DAW & open Vienna Ensemble Service (seems the server needs the key to start)
    3. Unplug Key from main DAW & plug into Mac Mini Slave (only have one key as I'm trying VE3 in demo to see if its worth purchasing)
    4. Use Directory manager on slave to make sure all Vienna Instrumentes are being accessed
    5. Open Vienna Ensemble Server
    6. Open Logic 8 and open an instance of "Vienna Ensemble" & Click reconnect.

For whatever reason, my slave does not show up in the list! Note, I'm running MOL & VNC just fine, so I dont think its a problem with my network settings, as these programs see the mini just fine. Any idea what's going on? Is it best to post these types of issues, or should I send an email to VSL tech support?

Thank you VERY MUCH for your help!

  • maybe just a basic misunderstanding:

    - the main DAW (MASTER) does not need licenses (and a key) as long as you don't open an interface of VE3 (the GUI) on this machine

    - the sample content, the key and so the licenses have to reside on the SLAVE

    - consequently you have to run directory manager (which only tells the VI / VE where the content is) on the SLAVE

    - needless to say VE3 software as well as LCC has to be installed on the SLAVE

then start VE3 service on the slave (make sure you confirm the message regarding firewall with *allow access*)

then open an instance of VE3 on the MASTER and connect to the slave in the dialog

  • advanced troubleshooting:

it can happen the SLAVE does not appear in the list of available SLAVES (this can be related to the order of binding of network interfaces if there is more than one on the MASTER) - then please try to connect manually to the IP address you know the slave has.

in case this still doesn't work double check your network settings (and cabeling?)

    - make sure MASTER and SLAVE reside within the same network segment (say 192.168.1.x where x is between 1 and 254, network mask 255.255.255.0)

    - make sure both computers have only 1 (or no) gateway (on mac: router) if you have multiple network interfaces

    - make sure the router (if any) is within the same network segment as the respective IP address

    - make sure not both network interfaces are not within the same network segment (eg. 192.168.0.x and 192.168.1.y is ok with network mask 255.255.255.0)

    - make sure no firewall (MASTER or SLAVE) is blocking, at least not port 3877 TVP and 3879 UDP 6477 TCP and 6479 UDP

  • Oh, I see now about the Master not needing to open VE service before running. Thats good to know!

VE3 Service on the slave opens fine, but I dont get this "firewall allow access" message at all. Perhaps this is related to my issue?

edit: Ok, now things are just acting weird. Before my VI standalone worked fine, and now its no longer showing me any of my installed libraries, even though directory manager directly points to them! And now when I try to open VE3 it says I dont have a proper license, even though the key is plugged in and everything had been opening fine yesterday! I'm going to repair permissions and restart and see what happens, but it looks like something screwy is going on!

Edit 2: I just see you added more wonderful troubleshooting tips! THANK YOU! I'm going to try them as well and see what happens. Thanks again for your help CM. I know how difficult it must be to help me and countless other users troubleshoot their systems, so I truly thank you for your help, time, and patience. THANK YOU!!

  • well, i've been soemhow aware networking might become tricky ...

to see if the firewall is the blocker, you could (temporarily) disable it ...

just to make it clear: VE3 additionally on the MASTER would need a license there too (two keys), you could get 2 demo codes though ...

i understood your setup to open VE3 on the SLAVE (via the connection dialog on your MASTER) only, so you would need samples, key, license there

Tried Temporarily disabling both systems firewalls and IT WORKS!!! Now I just need to figure out how to only let those ports that use VE go through.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!!

  • OMG! VE3 is AMAZING!! I LOVE IT!! Controlling slaves through VNC is a little frustrating, but I'm sure once I create some templates and make it "load & go" this will not be an issue! I'm going to run more tests to see if this will help my Maters CPU load on large projects, but this technology is really FANTASTIC!! THANK YOU VSL for being the visionaries you are and creating such wonderful tools!!

in case you have missed that dialog or it did not appear allow port 6477 (TCP for kommunikation) and 6479 (UDP for announcing) to pass the firewall at least for your local network
That solved the problem. It wasn't 3877 and 3879; it was 6477 and 6479. Just thought others might like to know this...

  • thx kevin for correcting the numbers, i must have confused the lines ...

the third group of numbers in IP address ....

think of the network mask as a filter ... 255.255.255.0 filters the last group only, 255.255.0.0 filters on third and fourth group ... so actually if the third gruop is different the network setup might be valid under certain conditions - this is referred as a class-B network then, but i would not recommend to use it that way unless you are really good in networking ...

try to keep it simple, stay with netmask 255.255.255.0 which is referred as class-C network and keep every networkadapter's IP address in a seperate segment

  • Anyone in the USA build a VE3 network (slave) unit for me? Will pay for a custom slave running on a Mac. Wish I was technical enough to do it myself but my main role is to produce music and this would really free up my Pro Tools RTAS CPU. I do have an extra G5 to use as a slave computer...
