    I currently use the Gigastudio audio capture feature (sync'd to MIDI) to create a mixdown WAV file for each slave machine - it works well for me.

    If I were to purchase any Vienna Instrument product, I would obviously need to use some some sort of VST host, like V-Stack. What I haven't figured out is how I can capture the output in the same way that GS is able to do. I know that VE routes audio back to the host via ethernet, but the fact that it only supports VI seems like a deal breaker for me. I've experimented with other audio-via-ethernet solutions in the past (like FXTeleport) and not had good results. I really just want to keep it simple and capture a stereo WAV direct to disk on each slave. Is anyone else doing it this way with VI or any other VST instruments? Is a 3rd party audio capture program the way to go? If so, can it sync to MIDI the way GS can? Am I missing something fundamental?

    I apologize if this is covered elsewhere in the forum - I spent a fair amount of time looking around but couldn't find the info I wanted.

    Vienna Ensemble (standalons) is a host; it's just that it only hosts Vienna Instruments. The best that I can suggest for your situation, if you don't want to upgrade to VE3, is to see if you can use an application like TapeIt to mixdown your files.

    Really the best thing to do would be to test the VE3 demo and see if it works for you.

    I hadn't heard of TapeIt. It does seem like it would work well for me. Of course I will check out VE when I'm able to purchase one of the VI products (I don't currently own any), but I think I'd prefer to have a host that can support any VST (VI or otherwise) and route all their outputs to one stereo mix.

    I believe that you can host VI in GS4, so when that's eventually released (and I've heard that it is on the way) maybe this is what you would prefer, as all you would need is an upgrade..

    Thanks for the tip - that's good to know. It would be nice to have all my giga samples together alongside VST instruments.

    But after reading more about VE, I'm curious: Is there some sort of RAM advantage to using VE? And if so, does it apply to PCs as well as Macs? The product description reads:

    "Separated server solution that utilizes additional free memory, leaving host sequencer memory or memory used by additional Vienna Instruments plug-ins unaddressed." And later on:

    "Note on the Mac OS X version: Currently it is possible to load up to 3 GB samples using your Vienna Instruments and ADDITIONAL 2.4 GB of samples using the new Vienna Ensemble host software. You can open several Vienna Ensembles (as stand-alone hosts) and fill each with up to 2.4 GB, limited only by the RAM size of your computer."

    You don't have to worry about what happens on a Mac. On Windows we actually have 64bit applications (such as Giga and VI/VE), so there are no clunky workarounds needed. [;)]

    Hmmm. So then are people in this community actually getting the promised 128 GB of RAM in a 64-bit Windows Vista system? I was under the impression that most RAM intensive setups were still using either the Mattias tweak with 2GB of RAM or the 3GB switch with 4GB of RAM.

    I have one 8GB slave and I load around 7.5GB in it. You are confusing VI and Giga. GS3 has extreme memory limits, and is comparatively inefficient in loading samples anyway. GS4 promises to get rid of all this, so providing that your sample player hosted in GS4 are 64bit (VI is), then you can use as much RAM as you have.

    The memory tweak is only useful for Giga, not for VI.

    I use XP64, not Vista, but according to cm it doesn't really make any difference.

    I see. Well it looks like I need to go back and read some of the long discussions about RAM on this forum. My slaves are all old 32-bit machines with 2GB of RAM. It sounds like what you're telling me is that if I purchase any Vienna Instruments and load them on my existing slaves in either GS4, VE, V-Stack, etc, then there will be no use for either of the RAM tweaks I mentioned. And I would need to decide whether or not it's worth it to increase the RAM to 3 or 4GB.

    I do have a question though: How did you decide on 8GB of RAM on your 64-bit slave? Is that all you happen to need/want or is there some other limitation I should be aware of?

    The RAM tweaks were originally needed in order for GS to use around 1.1GB RAM. Without them (in other programs) you should be able to use 1.4-1.6GB. The /3Gig switch will get you a couple of GB more loading, but with only 2GB RAM in your system, this is about as far as it can go. With 4GB RAM on my XP32 systems, using the /3Gig switch, I can load around 2.8GB samples in VE and run with no stability problems at all.

    I put 8GB in my XP64 machine, because that is the maximum that the motherboard will hold. To get more, one would need to use what is strictly speaking a server board.
