I was using RME HDSP with a Yamaha O1V2 Mixer via ADAT.
Everything from my Vienna machine was coming via ADAT and then from SEquencer machine ADAT - to Mixer ADAT and then Analogue Outs from the Mixer to Dynaudios.
Now, the mixer is gone and I am using an internal analogue board with the RME and then Monitor outs are going directly from there.
I have immediately noticed two things:
1. The sound was harsher before - now it seems a little warmer and sweeter.
2. The headroom and output levels have decreased a little bit it seems to my ears.
3. When I was using the Mixer I had clicks while working in Cubase - I was synchronising via ADAT - I guess this confirms that a dedicated Clock is a must even in such a small set up.
Are these differences psuedo or a reality?
And finally - since we are all working digitally now and with virtual instruments - Is it worth investing in outboard gear that gives a slightly vintage sound or plug ins that add that warmth to recordings etc?
And finally - how much difference do Converters from Prism Sound etc make?
Best,
Tanuj.
