  • Solo Strings Question

    Hey guys,

I had a question about the new solo string instruments.   I've been using 1st ed VSL for years (and of course no solo strings with that one, so

i just have basic easy questions i'd like to know, as i'm about to purchase new solo string software).

1st)  The new solo strings package comes with a virtual instrument engine.  Is that correct?  That's importatnt to me as i need something easy to use to mock up my concert and film stuff.  I'm not very good at mixing two samples together to get a line to decrescendo at the end of a phrase.

2nd) Now that i've posed a dynamics issue,  (if question one is correct) does the engine allow for increased/decreased intensity and velocity using the mod wheel?  The samples i use most on my VSL 1st ed are the ones that crossfade dynamically to give me complete control of a phrases performance.  I rarely use the ones that are premade fades.

3rd)  If the vsl solo string set doesn't, does anyone know of any solo string libraries that do the above things i've asked?

    Thanks everyone,

    Andrew Feazelle

  • Hello Andrew

I've a small tutorial of how to play a song with VI (VI-Midi) at

    http://www.beat-kaufmann.com/vitutorials/index.html

Try to follow the steps without a VI [:)]

At the end of the tutorial you will find the integrated page of VSL

with all the Videos around the using of VI.

There is another Tutorial "VI Tips & Tricks".  Perhaps you will find

some more information there. And of course you will have new

    questions then.

Another possibility: Buy the solo strings and be happy [:)]

I am too since the the day I have them on my harddisk...

  • Thanks Beat,

I've looked at a few of your tutorials, but haven't got to the videos yet (I have dial up).   Soon as i do a more comprehensive look at the tutorials

i send some more questions!  One question i'm trying to answer is how to play a sforzato attached to a long note then back off dynamically when i want and then re-build dynamically when i want (all on the same long note).   I use the mod wheel to crossfade on the original vsl string samples to do the dynamic part (and use a stac-1 patch to help with the begining accent of course).  It would be sweet if the solo strings all had a patch with the crossfades also.  The one i'm talking about is the Vl-14_mv_0sus_p-mf-f_3lay and related crossfading instrument patches (hrn, tpt, other strings).

    See ya,

  • Thanks DG,

Good to know!  I kinda looked at the Garitan vln and cello solo instruments, but it looks like there in no viola.  Garitan said they would be bringing one out in the summer, but i'm trying to gear up to work on a film where a quartet and a piano will be the main musical force for the score.  I'm trying to use old old old solo instruments from EMU and they just aren't working good - When i write concert music for quartet format i usually just use my regular vsl library for reference, but it sounds a bit silly in places using a string orchestra to mock up a quartet.  Now that I will be mocking up stuff for someone else to hear, i don't want the oddity of this to come into play.

    See ya

If you want to use xFading, and are prepared to put up with the phasing, you can build your own patch using cells. Basically this means that you have a choice of either playing both cells at once or xFading from one to the other with your choice of continuous controller. This is totally independent from xFading through the velocity layers of the instrument, which you can do with another controller.
