  • Question/suggestion about scalar runs

    Dear VSL,

I am a 1st edition user, and I simply adore your product. Especially the repetition tool-- it is an absolute godsend to John Adams ripoff artists like myself. [:D]

Now, my question has to do with scalar runs. The 1st edition has runs included, but the samples don't seem to be very flexible in regard to tempo (I have attempted to tempo stretch using the loop construction tool in Sonar, but haven't had much success [:(] ) I was wondering if you have plans to do for scalar runs what you did for repetitions. Is there a "Run Tool" in the works? And even if a Run Tool turns out to be undo-able, it would be great to have more run samples-- say 16th notes at 120bpm or 140bpm (major and minor scales and arpeggios, whole tone, chromatic, diminished scales, ect.). 8th notes, and 8th and 16 note triplets would be welcome as well. I, and others like me, could take these raw samples, tempo and pitch stretch them in our audio editing programs, and then cut and paste our way to more realistic sounding mockups. Has this already occurred to you? Is this idea flawed somehow?

I know this sounds like a tall order, and it is. But it seems to me that an orchestral mockup is more likely to give itself away as a mockup (i.e. as a fake) during fast passages than at any other time. How could I expect 12 discrete samples to accurately mimic the complexity of a violin section playing an ascending chromatic scale in 16th notes at a haulin' ass speed like 150-160 bpm? A nice, flexible library of run samples would do us a lot of good, I think. You've given us legato; you've given us repetition-- can you give us this?

    Thanks for listening.

  • Hello Deckard,

this kind of stuff is already recorded for most of the instruments, and we are calling it "performance scales".
We don't have the right tool for it at the moment, but we are working.
