  • Early Reflections in the Samplicity Library

Since there are quite a few people using that in combination with altiverb, I have a short question: In altiverb I have a switch for ER and for Tail. But when I loaded the "Large Hall 3 - ERs Only", the switch for the ER seems to be the Tail-switch instead of the ER-switch, cause switching Tail to off, I get no sound. . I don´t see this as a problem, but I´d like to know, if all ER of all patches are coming thru the tail in altiverb, and if there is a use for the altiverb ER-switch, when using samplicity.

  • I think this is a side-effect of AV's approach to determine what is an ER section and what is the tail.

Remember, my ER-only IRs are VERY short (they have no tail) so this may confuse Altiverb [8-|]

I think AV's algorithm only works 100% correct with full length IRs.

I guess it uses some propertion or ratio to determine what "might" be the ER section in the entire IR file.

    Cheers,

    Peter

  • I´ve just loaded the "Large Hall 3 - ER only" and it works very fine, except comming thru the Tail-output of Altiverb, which is no problem, if you once regocnize it. So am I right, that I have no control over the balance of ER and Tail with the samplicity IR´s, when I use them in altiverb, (so I should use two instances of altiverb - one for tail and one for ER - for that)?

  • Personally I use different plugins/instances for ERs and tails, since they are quite distinct components.

Does Altiverb not have the option to draw volume curves, like Pristine Space does? PS easily lets you attenuate the front of an IR with a drawn volume curve.

Otherwise just load the normal preset (ERs and tail) and let AV handle the ER vs Tail split.

    Cheers,

    Peter

PS Felix: don't forget these IRs were made with digital reverb units and not with real halls. I just lowered/switched off the ERs or the tail for some presets. It is up to the original programmers of these units if the ERs are truely representative or more an "addition" to the overall effect. For instance, the ERs in the Lex960 Large Hall preset come after the onset of the tail (which in theory is quite weird)!

  • Altiverb has a section, where you can change the gain of ER and the gain of tail. My "problem" is: When I load e.g. "Large Hall 3, ERs only", I should switch off the tail in altiverb and just use the ER. But it seems to me, that the ER sound is coming thru the tail output. Could you check that somewhere? . What do you mean by "presets". In altiverb there is a global preset section, but samplicity has only IR-files ending ".wav". Should there be any presets?

  • I meant the presets in the orginal devices, the L960 and the TC6000.

I am not familiar with the Altiverb controls or presets.

Remember that the point where ERs vanish into the (more chaotic) tail is a vague area and depends a lot on the size and reflectiveness of the "space".

From a psychofysical point of view (for localization purposes) the ERs tend to be in the 30-150 msec range. ERs in the first 0-40 msec tend to blend with the original sound (and may still give localization cues due to comb-filtering effects).
