  • Secondary Monitors

I know that secondary Monitors are important and I am planning to invest in a pair. Problem is that my future studio space is still under construction and will take a few months to get ready. Meanwhile, I need a pair of monitors - Which I then want to use as secondary pair of monitors in my studio early next year.

The control room will be roughly 2100 ft3 (Feet Cube). Listening distance wont be longer than 4-5 feet. I may go for either Dyanaudio or Genelecs for my Main Monitors.

But for now, can anyone suggest a good pair of secondary monitors that I can use for a few months now and then use them later in the studio as well?

Any help will be much appreciated. The aim of this thread is to understand the concept of secondary monitors - should they be of a different make than the primary monitors and smaller or with similar specification  - some people use crappy Hi-fi speakers ...so I am not really sure.

    Thanks.

    Best,

    Tanuj.

  • I'd suggest some speakers that are very different from the ones you're planning on using as your main ones. If your main ones are NFMs, try some big ones (even if you don't have a lot of room). My main monitors are Blue Sky System One, but I recently picked up a pair of UREI 809As - smaller versions of the big monitors in every studio in the '80s - to use as a second opinion. They wouldn't have been my first choice, but I put in a very low bid on ebay and won, so why not.

  • Call me old-fashioned, but I still use Yamaha NS-10 for the typical Second Opinion - almost everywhere (even at home :-) ...). Another good choice for the job are JBL Control-1.
