  • Mixing with Project SAM - mic distances

Does anyone know generally what distance the mics were from the instruments used for Opus 1 and 2? Since Project SAM stuff usually includes 2 or 3 differente distances, I'm trying to match them up to provide a more even sound when mixing Opus with SAM Brass and True Strike.

    Thanks.

  • This depends _a lot_ on the instrument, but in general, I'd say between 2 and 4 meters.

  • Sam,

I get pretty satisfying results with inserting Waves TrueVerb with ER's only (!) into the mixer's channels for dry brass. With some additional panning control and narrowing SAM's brass you can pretty much create the same depth perception.
The True Reverb early reflections can nicely add some ambience (without any reverb) to dry instruments. Make sure to pan the dry instruments first (with Midi or Waves S1) before the insert, so that the ER's are evenly distributed in the stereo field.
Finally use a send on both groups (dry and wet) to a reverb tail with not too much, or reduced ER's. Use less reverb on the wet instruments.

    Best,
