  • Bond theme

I know it's kind ol news. But using some new tricks and techniques that I've learned from Beat Kaufmanns tutorials and such things I've managed to actually mix my Bond theme.

Also I've added some new drum samples using the Apple loops with some hits by MarkOfTheStoat, I think it sounds pretty good, but I want a second opinion.

I realize that the new drum sounds mkae this piece a little more contemporary sounding, but as I sai before, not trying to compete, just using this piece to learn techniques for VSL.

I'm not totally happy with some of the string melodies mind you. But I'm too lazy to go round an redo them as they are okay. But if I ever do this piece again I think I know how I'd change it.

Anyways, let me know what you think of the mix.

  • The rhythms are better now... The strings really could profit from adjustements here or there. The too steady 4/4 isn't fitting for a real Bond Theme, but as you said it does for a contemporary sounding one. What other parts did you alter to the previous version of it?

Actually you took the plunge to revisit your stuff... I admire that because that's someting I'd hardly ever do!

  • Well the mix is not quite right and the older mixes were even more basic. So I have tightened up a few things in this new version, but it still has some problems. I've mentioned that I'm not totally happy with the strings myself and I may yet change them to something better.

I have made some minor alterations to the melody but nothing that is noticeable to the unsuspecting listener. I'd like to get this theme right but I think most of it is in getting the mix right. I'm still yet to acheive a realistic room sound.

At the moment I'm using 4 reverbs on 4 main buses for (Strings, Woodwinds, Brass and Perc). But I just can't seem to get them to gel. I think I'll just go with a single reverb, but try to use the others (without the actual reverb), and keep the relavtive depth.

  • Try to keep the 4 first, but make them a lot less wet. Then introduce a fifth, overall reverb... maybe that helps a bit... Actually I found less is sometimes more, so I'm coming along with two or three settings of the same verb for depth and one overall for room sound.

  • The 007 theme (not the bond theme) is one of my favourite Barry pieces.
I think the brass in your piece are just wonderful once the "soaring" part of the melody takes off. I also like the arrangement of the strings sitting just behind this. The percusive elements sound a bit mushy and repetitive.

Great to hear someone else mock this up though. I thought I was the only person who liked this piece.

  • Aww thanks Drew.

I really like the 007 theme too, but a friend of mine wanted me to do it, so that's the reason I ended up doing that one too. (Although I'd probably have done it before long anyways). The percussion is a little lame next to what it should be but that's only cos I'm using very basic samples so far. I've yet to invest in a really great drum sample unit or CD.

I had thought of doing this tune when I was playing around with the epic horns legato sample. I modelled it on the version as heard from 'Moonraker'. Anyways, glad you liked it. I may try and do a better version of this one at some point.

As for the Reverb on the Bond piece. I have found that using 4 AVerbs with as little verb as possible but keeping the Pre-delay and using the direct wet/dry signal to get the depth, and then using Space Designer to give the final omph!, that my reverb problems seem to be solved.

I don't think I have as great a room sound as what a professional mixing engineer could give me, but until one of those gives me a hand I like the sound of my new formula.
