  • So far so good

Hi - just wanted to give my thoughts after playing around with the VI for some hours. First of all the new interface is relatively easy to learn considering its complexity - well thought out. The new patches are really nice - i'm sure many people will be very happy with the ponticello, harmonics, and the legato zigane (to mention some highlights)

I'm still trying to get my head around the enormous potential of this beast. One of the REALLY useful things is the ability to blend between patches. I used it for legato and legato portamento... crossfading bewteen these patches works wonders and really adds to the simplicity of play. Earlier you had to choose between crossfading velocities or patches. Now you can create a patch where you can crossfade velocities AND patches. Awesome!

Now a few minor nags so far. The loading time of patches wasn't quite what I expected - its still faster than GS3, but it seemed instant in the tutorials. Then theres speed control. While a nice thing in theory, I doubt I'll be using it except for changing between fast and slow legato. So those who are hoping that this will be the solution to end all might be disapointed.

But these are minor nags - so far the VI is really great, and acheivement in design/programming. Also I might be imagining things but it even sounds better (the 24bit might be audiable after all [[:)]])

    --------------------------------------------

And now to some VI suggestions/questions which wont really make sense to someone who dosn't have the VI.

Things I would like to see:

    - The ability to move cells around - if your disatisfied with the placement of a cell, it would be a really awesome feature to just be able to drag the instrument into another cell etc.

    - Ability to invert the mid data of the controllers (this might already be possible I dont know). But for instance my pedal - when I activate that as V-Span controller It's default is the second row. That means I have to hold my foot down the play the first row of cells. It would be nice if it was the other way around - or that it was possible to invert it.

    - Is it possible to turn off release triggers? How? If not I would like that feature [[:)]]

    Thats it for now...
    -----------------------------------------

  • Hi Christian,

    regarding loading speed:
there will be a download for a small utility (in a few weeks), which will optimize your sample content for a much faster loading speed.

You can switch release samples On/Off on the Perform Page using the button PLAY RELEASE. You also can add a controller to this button, switching releases ON/OFF during your performance.

I think inverting controller is possible also on the Perform Page, selecting the Map control button and andjusting your controller setup.

    best
    Herb

  • Thanks Herb - you have thought of it all [[:)]]

What wonderful design... please give my regards to the designer.

Moving cells around would still be cool [[:)]]

Back to playing with this thing!

[EDIT] Ok. I have tried the inversion thing. I'm having some trouble, maybe someone can help. My pedal controls Expression by default CC11. When I clear that, and tell it to switch V-H span instead it does just that. However I would like to invert it. SO I go the the MAP CONTROL page and invert C11. What then happens is that C11 again gets assigned to Expression, and resets my setting so the pdal no longer controls V-H span.

  • Another little, but cool thing...all performance material is looped! Thats really sweet!

  • Would you stop posting please; I'm trying to do some work, and I can't with all this excitement going on [8o|]

    DG

  • hehe - I should be doing work as well. Instead I'mplaying around with VI -more fun, but not quite as finacialy feasible [:D]

  • that's not a little thing, looped peformance stuff is big help cool!

  • My copy of VI Chamber Strings should arrive in two days (UPS and/or Bestservice alwaysforget to print my name on the packet's label).

Could any new owner of VI post a short sample of Speed Control applied to a (single) string line?

    I'm curious like a cat.

    Meow...

  • Christian,

objectively, and for what you've seen so far, does it worth the price? Does it speed up the workflow?

(No flames, please! It's just an innocent question).

Well - hard to say objectively if its worth the price. I mean, it depends on what you have to sacrifice to pay for it. I do think that its very expenssive, but to me its worth it in the sense that I'm happy I bought it, and only had to sacfrice buying a car [:D]. So is it worth is? To me - yes! But i'm a VSL junkie hehe.

Regarding workflow - heres what I wrote in another forum:

It's to early to tell. Mostly because there are som many ways you could set up your instruments that you really need to use alot of time to set them up. However I can imagine that once thats done I'm sure my workflow will speed up.

Thing is, the advantage of 14 miditracsk per instrument is that you have a clear overview of the ariculations. With the new VI all that is hidden from you unless you open the VI's interface. Therfore you need to know each of your matrices fairly well and use the same setup for most instruments (I.e. switching to staccatos always uses the C1 keyswitch etc)

But i'm pretty exited about the posibilities. Also even if my workflow does not speed up, I'm sure I will make more interesting music. Earlier it was a pain to crossfade say sustains into tremelo, or regular legato to portamento - now its so easy that I think I will find myself doing these advanced tricks more often.

  • You could split your single track into several midi tracks ? one for all short notes, one for legatos, one for repetition ... no ?

But I like the fact to use one midi track. I unlike to program my music ... I want to play it ! [:D]

I'll surely buy this new product soon (as a Pro Ed. user, the new violins are very interesting).

Thanks Christian and VSL team !

  • Well I've got my keys now if only I had the DVDs.... J'attends La Poste

  • Chanceux ... pas encore disponible ici [:(]

Yes, easily - but not very CPU efficient as you would need an istance er track [:)]

  • Darn you Christian! You got it before me....maybe I'll get mine tomorrow [:D]. So how does the "expressive legato" macro sound? What's included patch wise in that one? Are you using an expression pedal to control velocity expression while using the mod wheel to switch between patches? Is it pretty easy to "freeze" and fast with a big amount of patches in a vi loaded? Hope you enjoy it [:)]

  • I enjoy it -but as much as I would like to sit around and play with it I need to get some work done using my old setup. I dont think i'll be integrating the VI into my setup until I have the whole cube, and maybe even MIR. That way I can start on a fresh, and dont have to setup several times as new stuff arrives. In my experience these things take days to get right.

I tried use the expression pedal to switch vertical matrices. But I cant get it to invert, without resetting it to control expression again. So sorry I cant answer your other questions - most of the time I have used trying to find out how best to setup my instruments.

  • Well, I hope you get a great setup going Christian and thanks for answering what you did. Take care!

  • Hi Christian, I am interested to know if it's easy on the CPU/RAM/resource to load a complete (5-part) string orchestra on a single computer (say with only 1GB RAM). I will be upgrading my DAW and re-allocating the setup with all my host/servers. And since I broke my promise of not buying any dongle-based softwares by upgrading Samplitude already.... might as well... [:D] [:D]

    Cheers,
    Frankie

  • Well - depends on how many articulations you want [:)]

CPU wise its no problem at all - The 1 GB will be a bottleneck. But with 2GB you could easily load violins, celli, viola and basses with quite an impressive amount of articualtions.

When/if I get the time I can do a test where I tell you all the data, including what articualtions I have loaded etc.

I will say that there is about 300-400mb free ram in difference bewteen my main DAW (which has to load up cubase) and then a similar computer which only has to load up V-Stack.

  • Thanks Christian! Just one more thing, not sure if that's answered before coz I wasn't following the VI thing too closely. [:O]ops: Let's say if you load 2 instances of violins on the same computer, do the same articulation load twice into RAM or only once? Or is there actually an alternate way to work with 1st and 2nd viollins with the new VI interface?

Man I can feel your excitement too! [[;)]]

    Cheers,
    Frankie
