    Well - hard to say objectively if its worth the price. I mean, it depends on what you have to sacrifice to pay for it. I do think that its very expenssive, but to me its worth it in the sense that I'm happy I bought it, and only had to sacfrice buying a car [:D]. So is it worth is? To me - yes! But i'm a VSL junkie hehe.

    Regarding workflow - heres what I wrote in another forum:

    It's to early to tell. Mostly because there are som many ways you could set up your instruments that you really need to use alot of time to set them up. However I can imagine that once thats done I'm sure my workflow will speed up.

    Thing is, the advantage of 14 miditracsk per instrument is that you have a clear overview of the ariculations. With the new VI all that is hidden from you unless you open the VI's interface. Therfore you need to know each of your matrices fairly well and use the same setup for most instruments (I.e. switching to staccatos always uses the C1 keyswitch etc)

    But i'm pretty exited about the posibilities. Also even if my workflow does not speed up, I'm sure I will make more interesting music. Earlier it was a pain to crossfade say sustains into tremelo, or regular legato to portamento - now its so easy that I think I will find myself doing these advanced tricks more often.

  • You could split your single track into several midi tracks ? one for all short notes, one for legatos, one for repetition ... no ?

    But I like the fact to use one midi track. I unlike to program my music ... I want to play it ! [:D]

    I'll surely buy this new product soon (as a Pro Ed. user, the new violins are very interesting).

    Yes, easily - but not very CPU efficient as you would need an istance er track [:)]

  • Darn you Christian! You got it before me....maybe I'll get mine tomorrow [:D]. So how does the "expressive legato" macro sound? What's included patch wise in that one? Are you using an expression pedal to control velocity expression while using the mod wheel to switch between patches? Is it pretty easy to "freeze" and fast with a big amount of patches in a vi loaded? Hope you enjoy it [:)]

  • I enjoy it -but as much as I would like to sit around and play with it I need to get some work done using my old setup. I dont think i'll be integrating the VI into my setup until I have the whole cube, and maybe even MIR. That way I can start on a fresh, and dont have to setup several times as new stuff arrives. In my experience these things take days to get right.

    I tried use the expression pedal to switch vertical matrices. But I cant get it to invert, without resetting it to control expression again. So sorry I cant answer your other questions - most of the time I have used trying to find out how best to setup my instruments.

  • Hi Christian, I am interested to know if it's easy on the CPU/RAM/resource to load a complete (5-part) string orchestra on a single computer (say with only 1GB RAM). I will be upgrading my DAW and re-allocating the setup with all my host/servers. And since I broke my promise of not buying any dongle-based softwares by upgrading Samplitude already.... might as well... [:D] [:D]

  • Well - depends on how many articulations you want [:)]

    CPU wise its no problem at all - The 1 GB will be a bottleneck. But with 2GB you could easily load violins, celli, viola and basses with quite an impressive amount of articualtions.

    When/if I get the time I can do a test where I tell you all the data, including what articualtions I have loaded etc.

    I will say that there is about 300-400mb free ram in difference bewteen my main DAW (which has to load up cubase) and then a similar computer which only has to load up V-Stack.

[:O]ops: Let's say if you load 2 instances of violins on the same computer, do the same articulation load twice into RAM or only once? Or is there actually an alternate way to work with 1st and 2nd viollins with the new VI interface?

    Apparently it's the same as GS; the same sample only loads in RAM once.

    I have now mad a test, loading 4 instances (Violins, Celli, Viola and basses.)

    Its a 2gb machine, starting with a little over 1500mb free when I started loading instances. After the four had been loaded, 800MB remained.

    Each instance had the following articulations loaded:

    Short staccato
    Staccato
    Short Detache
    Long Detache
    Sustain
    Legato normal
    Legato Portamento

    Bare in mind also that the legatos have both p and f layers loaded, and that each of the other articulations have 2 versions of each note loaded. Personaly I find it pretty impressive

    Now I will test how much of the remaining 800mb I can fill up.

  • Christian, is it hard to figure out how to set up a "patch"?

    I want some lead violins that can go from Legato, to sustained, to pizz, to a choice of decresendos. Do they include tutorials on how to set up all this? I'm sure after a few days of having it this will seem like a silly question but right now it's going to be priority one for me and I'm just wondering how brain damaging it is to do...

  • Its a bit of trial and error. But learning the basic principle of it is easy. Whats hard is finding out exactly how to set it up as you want it, and in a way so switching from one patch to the other is natural. But its dooable sure. The example you mention is just a matter of loading each patch into a cell in the horizontal matrix, and just telling it that you want to switch patch using keyswitches.

    What hard is setting up the advanced stuff. But there is no braindamage involved as its plenty of fun if you have the time to do it [:)]
