    Hi all,

I'm a guitarist/musician/composer from Holland and I'm 22. I began with music about 5/6 years ago when I picked up my first guitar. I became interested in composing and from rock/metal I also went to classical/soundtrack. My Space Suite is finished after about a half year work and ready for download at my site:

    www.sidbarnhoorn.tk or else,
    http://sidbarn.magic-systems.net">http://sidbarn.magic-systems.net

    Tell me what ya think...

    Take care,
    -Sid.

  • Hi Sid,

Nice stuff! Already told you so.
So now you entering the vast worlds, eh galaxies of VSL? Prepare for hyperjump! [:D]

If you want to checkout Opus 1, just come and visit me in my office. For more VSL, you should visit Maarten in Utrecht.

    Cheerio,

    Peter

  • Hi Sid!

Your songs are really beautiful [[;)]]
    My favourite is "First Flight"...

And exactly 02:15 in the song two or more horns play in unison, I love that part. and the perfect match of notes they play.

    What horns are they?

Is everything created with Opus 1?

  • Thanks man!!

All the brass in my Space Suite is Project SAM: www.projectsam.com, briliant brass... really good!

    Take care,
    -Sid.

    Hi Sid,

I've just listened to all of the Space Suite. I like Lullaby of the Stars particularly and First Flight.

The horns really sing, don't they Sid. Sometimes a little over powering, but thats just being picky. Very good track the Lullaby of Stars.

Horn sound on First Flight, and indeed the whole track is very good.

This sort of writing would go well with any Sci-fi film or something like Excalibur (which is basically Sci-fi) hehe. If youv'e only be involved with music for 5/6 years, then you should have a busy period ahead of you.

    What reverb do you use?

Overall great writing and sound for this type of genre.

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

Thanks for your message. I used the Mystery Reverb from the NFX4 plugins you can install for GigaStudio. I really sounds great and especially for this kind of work.

I'm gonna do a Music Education this year, mainly Composition for the Media. I'm already busy with 2 soundtracks so when they're done it would look very good on me resume and I'll post them on me site too by then.

    Take care,
    -Sid.

  • Hey Sid... How come you didn't use the French horns in Opus 1 instead of SAM horns?

Do you feel the SAM horns is better?

"I'm gonna do a Music Education this year"
Are you going to teach or learn(student)?

    Kind Regards AJ

    Hello Audun,

For myself, I tested them out the other day. It's not that they're better. It's just that they're different. The Dutch company seem to specialise in French Horns, Trombones and Trumpets. They are excellent in my view, but have a different sound to VSL.

This just shows how mixing different libraries can be used. I will be getting the Sam library of Horns, Troms and Trumps soon. I'm hoping to to be able to use them in conjunction with one another (ie with VSL and Kirk Hunter), depending on mood and sounds required within a piece.

Very difficult in my view to say one library is better than another these days, unless it's obviously aweful. As I regard the Horn section of an orchestra to be as important as any other section, the more examples I have available, the better. That goes for Strings, Woodwinds etc etc.

What do you and Sid think?

    Paul

  • I was only able to download (modem) one of the cues, but liked it. Very interesting music, and I especially like the concept of finding inspiration in the astronomical subjects. I feel similarly about these things. 99.9999% of reality is out there.

  • I agree with you Paul. There are alot of libraries out there but for my own personal flavor and feeling I think Project SAM is the best for me. I can do all I want with them from very subtle passage to roaring, heavy ones and then also get the sound I want.

I leave my op.1 as it is because now I can better myself with the new samples I got. I think I'll also get Opus 1 and with that Garritan Strings and Xsample Strings. With all those diffirent libraries which all sound good but just that diffirent, you can make a unique sound which is also something I'm after in my own work. I've done this now I've to do something totally diffirent. Maybe even the same genre but a whole other approace.

Anyway, thanks for listening and your input. If you have any comments, suggestions or criticism. Speak!

Btw, I'm gonna learn refering to the "Music Education". Wanna do the "Composer of the Media"-part of the Education.

    Take care,
    -Sid.

  • Alrighty!
    I am bying Opus 1, that's why I wondered...

  • I allways say that, "I am buying opus 1"....but when in holy christ is the VSL VIDEO TUTORIAL coming out??? [:D]

I'm afraid I wont understand ANYTHING of the leg. rep. alt. tools. and other things that are very useful... [8-)]

Sounds like a good idea for a new thread Audun. [:)]

  • Hi guys,

Well mostly what I do is just experimentation. Trying out different stuff, testing if I can do certain things... whatever. If there are documentations you can, of course, turn to that. But mostly I like to figure stuff out by myself, the hard way... [;)]

    Anyway, take care,
    -Sid.

BTW: My Space Suite is now also featured at: www.hobbyspace.com [:D]

  • ok...Well yes you can definetly try, try and experiment and try.
But a video tutorial wouldn't be a bad thing...

I don't want to be suprised of it's release, I want to hear WHEN it is coming... If someone knows, please say...........NOW...Sid,Where did you come up with the idea to make "space music"? Are you facinated by space? (well who isn't)
And it's not really much to say about your songs except that they are good...REALLY good. You make the orchestra sound real even though it kinda is.

When I hear a song and hear something that could be better or changed I say to myself: oh, why did he go from C to E and not C to G etc. and things that don't fit in.....
And when I hear your songs playing, theres nothing "wrong" with them. Things match and sounds just great so I can just sit and enjoy....
Especially final flight as I mensioned, the brass at the end....aaahhh. I envy you [[;)]]

  • Hi Audun,

Haha, thank you! Well I came with the idea because I'm a sci-fi fan and I'm into astronomy-stuff... pictures, galaxies/nebula's 'n stuff. I'm still not quite sure I'm finished telling my space story but I'm sure I'll make another one.

But all the composition I make came from feeling and my head. I mostly hear/know how something must sound before it's written and that's pretty handy to have...

I'm currently thinking of doing a suite of 1 composition. The whole story in 1 compostion of about 20/30min. I'm still working stuff out so be patient... [;)]

    Take care,
    -Sid.

  • Hi sid...........The orchestration and arrangement is very good!......the only downside thing i will say (sorry) is that it sounds like a sample libray in certain areas.I just feel it lacks that total authenticity feel ie. you know this is a sample library playing.......but very well done all the same!

  • Yes well, that's indeed the only downside of samples... [;)]

Anyway, I'm gonna get VSL First Edition and hope my composing and sound will improve. I'm very busy with my second Opus and I think I'll make a sequel to the Space Suite.

    Anyway, thanks for your message!

    Take care,
    -Sid.
