  • Overdrive...Led Foot Tutorial

    I've now been asked a few times, how I did the Led Foot Demo.

    http://vsl.co.at/admin/downloader.asp?file=/data/Sounds/MP3/Led_Foot.mp3

    As a service to "Overdrive" users and VSL I will try to explain, through a small tutorial. I've never done a tutorial so please bear with me.

    First, I am a guitarist. It is my main instrument so I have a good understanding of how it is supposed to sound. All my programming was done on keyboard. I put some basic hall reverb and a quarter note delay on the guitar buss.

    For myself, there are 2 broad ways to approach using this lib.

    1.You can find a basic patch and jam on it to get your ideas down. You will have to go in later and work out your articulation choices so it sounds realistic.

    2. You can start by having up a pallete to draw from and basically "compose" your solo.

    of course you can combine different degrees of each approach.

    Led Foot demo

    At first it looks like i used a lot of patches but as you go down the list you'll see many start to repeat

    Here is the basic list first.

    EG_stac_velocity-1 panned mostly left
    EG_stac_velocity-2 panned mostly right

    the following 2 were always used together
    EG_sus_all (this is the non performance patch)
    EG_perf-leg_slide_sus++

    EG_perf-bend
    EG_trill_Mi-3+RS
    EG_sus_wb2+RS-fx1
    EG_trill_Mi-3+RS
    EG_fast-rep_dyn_160
    EG_mV_perf-leg_marc
    EG_perf-leg_ha-pu into
    EG_oV_sus+subsus

    Here is the play by play sports fans

    1-20sec ....rythym figure (which goes through the most of the tune)........
    2 patches....
    EG_stac_velocity-1 panned mostly left
    EG_stac_velocity-2 panned mostly right

    21sec....first lead note
    EG_perf-bend
    A cool technique here is to play 2 notes quickly. A minor or major 2nd is quite effective and sounds like you are naturally bending into the note.

    23 sec. 3 note phrase
    This is the new performance tool function where you use 2 patches at the same time. One is for attack, the other sustains.
    EG_sus_all (this is the non performance patch)
    EG_perf-leg_slide_sus++

    26 sec...trill....i used the pitch bend here to simulate the whammy effect
    EG_trill_Mi-3+RS

    29 sec...same technique as at 21 secs
    EG_perf-bend

    32sec.
    EG_sus_wb2+RS-fx1
    This is a simple patch and one of my favorites....This whammy patch with release sample has a lot of personality

    34sec (3 notes)
    EG_perf-bend into EG_sus_wb2+RS-fx1

    37sec
    EG_trill_Mi-3+RS

    40 sec
    EG_perf-bend

    42secs
    EG_sus_all (this is the non performance patch)
    EG_perf-leg_slide_sus++

    48sec. this is a tremelo patch
    EG_fast-rep_dyn_160 into EG_mV_perf-leg_marc
    This latter patch could have really been anything with sustain....I used a little pitch bend at the end of it to simulate a whammy bar.

    53 secs
    EG_sus_all (this is the non performance patch)
    EG_perf-leg_slide_sus++
    into EG_sus_wb2+RS-fx1

    58secs...hammerons....this is a very Holdsworth sounding lick, and the the only really flashy thing in the demo. It is also very easily executed due the performance tool.

    EG_perf-leg_ha-pu into
    EG_perf-bend into EG_sus_wb2+RS-fx1

    final chord
    EG_oV_sus+subsus

    Hope This Helps

    Happy Shredding

  • thanks for your effort, sharmy! [:D]
    i'm sure our users realy appreciate this.
    if we initialize a poll about the content of Overdrive II some day, i hope you support me with your input again.
    all the best,
    michael

  • Yes that tutorial was great! Just like your song...
    People sit and comose for hours and maybe days, i'ts like no one notices them or appreciate their work when they leave the cinema when the end credits is "rolling".
    I appreciate your work Craig!

    OT: By the way, you have a cool name Sharmat!
    It would look very good on a big screen...

  • Thanks michi,

    I would be honered to help again in the future. I just love the vision of VSL and the people involved.

    Audun,
    Thanks for appreciating my efforts. Hopefully some users can benefit from this tutorial.

  • Yes, this is wonderful. Thank you Craig. I hope that other advanced users will be willing to share their techniques to getting the most out of the various VSL instruments.

  • Hi Craig Sharmat, let me say that your song is simply great.
    However I don't understand some steps in your tutorial (it is great too).

    First of all I've Overdrive, cubase SE and Hilon SE.

    These are my questions :
    1. you said :
    23 sec. 3 note phrase you use 2 patches at the same time ==>
    EG_sus_all (this is the non performance patch)
    EG_perf-leg_slide_sus++

    What does it mean ? Should I load these patches in Hilon (program 1
    and program 2) and should I load Legato preset in Performance tool ?

    2. EG_perf-leg_slide_sus++, I can't find it. Where is it?

    3. you said : EG_sus_all is the non performance patch.
    But This is an alternation combination.
    So I should load it in Hilon and I sould
    load then alternation preset in the Performance tool.
    Could you explain this step better, please ?

    BEST REGARDS.

  • Just in case anybody wondering, I think with"Hilon SE" he just meant he is using "Halion SE"... Nice it not only occurs once, hehe [;)]
