  • Trumpet in Bb ?

    Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and was wondering if anyone could tell me why the omission of a Trumpet Bb from the VSL? I am going to be starting a project in the new year with a composer and he's queried it. I didn't know what to say to him as I'm just engineering it.

Hope it's not a silly first post. [:O]ops:

    Regards,

    Andy

I'm not a user of VSL (yet), but I don't think I'm wrong in saying that there most certainly is a Bb Trumpet included in the library. Any time one sees a trumpet sample in a library without a explicit key designation, I would think it would be safe to assume that it's a Bb instrument, as the Bb trumpet is by far the most common. The fact that the key is not designated more or less points to the fact that it is a Bb instrument (as opposed to C).
Most trumpets are Bb instruments, as are most cornets and flugelhorns. The ommission of a Bb trumpet from any "complete" orchestral library would be weird indeed. But I'm sure that if you listen to any of the VSL demos on this site, just about any trumpet you hear is transposing in the key of Bb. See the topic Bow Slaps? Percussion??? in the Online Instrumental Studies section of the forum for more info. There was a question there about Bb Trumpets.

Hmmm . . . looks like I spoke too soon. In the articulations list, the trumpets are indeed designated C instruments. Which is odd. But I'm sure there is a reason for that. Okay, I'm with you. I'd like to know why the apparent ommission of the common Bb trumpet.

P.S. Andy, I spoke in ignorance on some unfounded assumptions. Sorry if I came across wrong.

  • I remember an extensive thread on this very topic (C vs. Bb trumpet) in on of our forums only some months ago. Please do a search.

Funny . . . I did a search on that last night before posting my last message. All that popped up was this thread and that other recent thread on Instrument Online Studies. Then again, maybe I don't know how to use the search engine either . . . [*-)]

  • I discussed this EXTENSIVELY in another thread. No time to find it right now, but if someone could post the link here that would be great.

  • Thanks for the link, Dietz! Very helpful discussion there. Wonder why my searh didn't loacte it . . .

  • Is the Bb Trumpet included in opus 1 or any other version of vsl?
Maybe it's obvious but I can't see it in the demo section nor the articulation lists...
Is there something wrong with me, my eyes maybe?

  • Nope. Not included in OPUS 1 or any other product yet offered by VSL.

But for the love of me I just checked out Dan Dean Trumpet, and it sounds GREAT!!! It must be a Bb Trumpet.

8 dynamic layers per note (ppp, pp, p, mp, mf, f, ff and fff)
    All notes chromatically sampled.
Articulations include: NV, Portato, Staccato, Straight Mute, fp, fp long/medium and short crescendo.

Let me check .... hang on ....

hmm. So far can't find it. But the range indicates it's a Bb not a C. ie: it goes down to E3.

  • Ok....nice information.
What would you suggest to do to get "that" Horn in superman theme by John Williams? If I don't buy Dan Dean Trumpet? (is that another sample library?)
I'm buying Opus 1 and are not going to have all the instruments unlike Pro edition.
So what do you think I can do to "get" that Bb trumpet sound without using the actual Bb trumpet Evan?

    Thanks

  • I posted an EQ fix last night to whip the VSL Trumpets into shape! They are better now. Still like the 8 velocity layers in the DAN DEAN.

I don't have much experience with real C Trumpets so maybe evanevans could give more advice. But myself, I'd just go ahead and get the OPUS 1 and try out the C trumpets first, before looking around for something more.

    ~Chris

  • You ought to own OPUS 1. If one particular instrument group isn't doing it for you you can always save up for DAN DEAN whatever. In my opinion, the C Trumpets are not so convincing. But to have OPUS 1 will mean more for you musically than not to. Partially because of the performance tools.

    Go ahead, buy it! [:)]

    Thanks VSL.
