  • Using 2 computers

Can anyone point me to a thread which explains how to use 2 Macs, the second one used as sample playback into the primary one. I'm wanting to be able to load more matrices (who isn't?!) than I can at present with my G5 2 processor 2.5GHz machine. I imagine another PC can be used to boost the 'power' of my system but have no idea how to do this.

  • Usually the 2nd PC "slave" machine is set-up with just a host application, like Bidule or V-Stack, and it simply receives midi and sends back audio. So it works like running an old external hardware sampler - you hook up a midi interface for "playing" it, and an audio interface for hearing it. A lot of people now also use ethernet for sending the midi and audio, though this is only really practical on Windows, since the one solid app for network audio is FX-Teleport, which is still PC-only, at the moment. The rest of us use hardware for the audio part, at least (MIDI Over Lan is a decent program for dealing with network midi), and generally try to send everything via ADAT Lightpipe, which gives you 8 channels of audio (4 stereo pairs) over optical cables. Hope that helps. --J.

  • At this stage I'd suggest getting a machine with a 64-bit processor, i.e. a Core2 Duo at least. If you're going to use Windows slave, I'd look for a motherboard that accept eight cores if you want to upgrade. The next generation of software is in the wind, and programs are starting to be able to take advantage of all the processing power and memory.
