  • Sizing a DAW

    Hi,

I am new to music composition but I have acquired Sibelius 5.0 and GPO and I am looking at Vienna products. I have a bunch of questions:

    1. I am purchasing a Dell XPS 1710 with 2.33 GHz processor and 4 GB memory and 160 Gbyte disk (7200 RPM). This seems fast - but is it sufficient for music generation. I am only interested in writing music (notation) and then doing playback via virtual instruments (like VSL). Is this fast enough? Other recommendations?

    2. If I buy VSL products is that a big step up from GPO?

    3. Will I be able to use VSL instruments in Sibelius 5.0. I note that they use a special version of Kontakt 2 player for GPO. Can I use VSL instruments in Sibelius Scores? What VST container should I use?

    Your help is greatly appreciated.

    Sincerely,

    Ron

  • The machine you mention should be fine I think. 7200 RPM drives are I think fast enough for sample libraries.

I think upgrading from GPO to VSL is a big step, particularly if you're looking at the Vienna Instruments and not the legacy libraries (Horizon etc.), because the VI player will take you a while to get used to but it's very quick learning I find.

But remember that at the end of the day it isn't your samples which determine how good your music is .. that's down to you [:P] (But hell yeah .. VSL kicks ass!)

And apparently, Sibelius 5 does support AU's and VST plugs .. so you can run the VI's right inside of Sib. Which is cool and saves you having to screw around with kontact or any other thing.

The VI is both for AU and VST so it should work nicely inside of any sequencer that supports those formats. No need for an additional player.
