  • Using my G5 as a slave

So I'm running VSL entirely on an IntelMac now, and I can safely load a ton of VI's without problems. However, even since I got my EWI and started inputting that. The sheer amount of breath control data on every track can cause problems in thick sections. So I was considering running my G5 that is just sitting as disk space right next to the intel, as a slave.

I really have no idea how to do this?

Does anyone have a link, or possibly some advice?

    My setup:

    MacPro 3.0 ghz 8GB Ram
    Apogee Ensemble Audio Interface
    2x Glyph 1TB Fire 800 drives

The G5 currently has the standard Apple audio interface and 2.5gb RAM. Runs at 2.0ghz I believe.

First you have to have some MIDI com. between the two Macs. I recommand MidiOverLan from Musiclab, don't spend time on the built-in midi network in the Os.
Then you will need a soundcard, I use RME ( in fact it's now 5 RME I use) ex. HDSP 9632/9652 which will let you stream audio through ADAT to the Apogee.
Well that's all, - in the first fase [[;)]]

geez, yes! Feed that baby some RAM and put it to work! I'd say just put in 4 GB, as that's a practical limit when running a single host app - the DDR400 for that machine should be dirt cheap by now.

You should be able to get a fair bit of use out of that, if you need more sample RAM (hehe... who doesn't?). Once you've done what Stig suggested, I can highly recommend a little app called Bidule, by a company called Plogue (plogue.com). This app makes a great VI host, is very efficient, and flexible as well. Install that, load up some VIs, and you're good to go.

    cheers,

  • Wait, so is it possible to use VI's on a slave without having a DAW?

Because I'd have to buy a whole new logic to run on a seperate computer probably (only one dongle)

Also, how does the VSL key work when you only have one? Do you buy another and authorize the libs that you put on the slave only?

  • i'm saying it only quietly: logic as slave is not the best choice performancewise, IMO ....
you can either split your collections across several machines having the respective licenses on seperate ViennaKeys (eg. strings, brass, woodwinds) or in case your setup would not allow that for some reason request a linked license (splitting off a temporary license from your master, where a master license is always a std+ext library of a certain collection)

moving licenses from one key to another is done in the LCC by the *transfer license wizard*

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.

Absolutely! I host the VIs in Bidule on my slave machines, and it works great.

  • Thanks for all your input.

I was never really planning to do this due to the cost of upgrades and software and such. But i was curious about having the option if I ever needed it.

My MacPro runs an amazing amount of VI's, so it's doing great now. And after the 64-bit swtich, I will be able to tap into all the power and RAm that it's capable of.
