  • Vienna Special Edition: violins sustain sample slow attack

    Hi,

I'm new to VI and just bought VSE. I'm making my first test piece and I noticed that the violins sustain patch has a rather slow attack. This is fine for long notes but if I want to have them play a melody, it is too slow. When all tracks are playing it starts to sound as if the string section is playing off beat.

The attack slider on the "Perform" page is down all the way and the attack slider in the patch edit field doesn't seem to do much.

I notied that the Detache patch has a good attack but that's a short sample. So now I have been putting key switches all over the melody to switch between sustain and detache but that doesn't really sound great either.

What I really need is a sustain sample with a shorter attack. Is this impossible without buying the Orchestra Strings library or am I missing something?

    Thanks,
    Vincent

  • Hi Vincent,

for playing melodies I would recomment using the performance legato patches.

  • Yes, I read about performance legato on page 40 of the manual, which is about presets.
But I can't seem to find them. Are they part of VSE?

If I go to presets, I see Preset SE01 through SE34, one preset per instrument group. If I load the one for Orchestral Strings, I get matrixes for each type of strings (Violin, Viola etc.) but none of the matrixes or pathes say anything about performance legato.

Could something be missing from my installation?
    Thanks

  • "Performance Legato" is a patch,
all wind and string instruments do have legato patches. (except appassionata strings)
These patches are part of the VSL matrixfiles and therefore also part of the VSL preset files.
I would recommend to look at the video tutorial "Patches & Matrices - An Overview" to get familiar with the file structure of the VIs.

  • At the risk of being a pain [:O]ops:

I don't have any patches called "Performance legato". I do have patches that are called just plain "Legato". Are those the ones you mean?

They sound ok (too bad they only have 2 velociy layers), however, those only seem to accept one note at the time. So if would like a 2nd violin section, I would need a second instance of VI?

Thanks for answering these beginners questions...

Legato patches are monophonic, therefore you can only play one note at a time. These are to be used for melodies, which, er, only tend to have one note at a time.

    Hi Vincent,

the Legato patches give you authentic legato performances, it´s really worth using them. A second violin section means a second VI, if you decide to go with the legato patches.

Please make use of the Velocity Xfade feature, it really makes a big difference in the dynamic performance [:)]

There are Video Tutorial about Velocity Xfade and many other features of the Vienna Instruments on you Software CD and also here [:)] (as Herb suggested, this will get you up to speed quickly!!)

    Hope that helps!

  • Hi, Reopening an old thread... I'm new to VI and am having the same problem as Vincent. Layering Staccato + Legato puts too much emphasis on the staccato, even when I turn the staccato layer down. Detache and sforzando have better attacks but are also too forceful. Sustain has the same problem. I'm just trying to do alternating string eighth notes. The attack fader only seems to change anything when you move it past 50% to make attacks slower. My solution for now has been in Logic to manually drag each region slightly to the left after I've recorded a passage. This seems to sound the best, but is there any other solution? Do the performance legato patches work better, and where can I find them? Thanks, Jordan
