  • Digital Monitoring Systems.

I was just wondering what people's thoguhts were about Digital Monitors?

Anyone has any experience or theories or comments/suggestions etc?

Do Digital Speakers have a 'Clear' advantage over Analogue speakers?

Or is this just fancy equipment?

    Any thoughts?

  • very expensive. Would love to hear what they sound like though.

  • This article is from a time before the Vienna Symphonic Library appeared on the market (2002), but the central parts regarding the benefits of the Air-system is still true:

... there are many pro's and con's when it comes to monitors with digital inputs, but on the long run, it will be the future.

  • Please forgive my lack of experience in this subject, but assuming the A/D convertor built into the speaker is of equal quality to one placed elsewhere, surely the only advantage of a speaker with a digital input is that the analogue signal now travels down a very short cable??

  • The vital issue here is surely the quality of the speakers - that seems to me much more important than the way the signal is delivered. If a speaker costs a lot more than the competition we must expect it to sound a lot better, and to make that judgement I've found it's best to take the technical specs with a pinch of salt and rely on one's ears!

  • If you are working completely ITB (in the box) without eny external processing, and if your only D-to-A conversion is going to the speakers, then I could understand how/why such monitors might be attractive.

Where price comes into play, I think the money is better spent elsewhere: on a better interface with great converters and/or on great speakers that "speak" and don't "convert"

    Just my 2dB.
