  • While I'm at it, I have another question. I have a new macbook pro 2.16 dua core processor, 2 GB of RAM, 160 GB hard drive (will be getting a 400-500 GB and 7200 rpm external, hopefully before vienna instruments arrive). I have a M-audio midisport 2x2 for my midi to usb, and I am sequencing in Logic Pro 7. Starting out, am I going to need an external sound card or more RAM or anything like that? I know more RAM will be needed when I get a ways beyond the special edition, but will I be OK for awhile? I am only using midi, no real audio. Also, for anyone that has them, do the East West Quantum Leap Symphonic Choirs mix well with VSL? Sorry if this is off-topic, but I have some questions and I already created a thread. Why not use it?

  • As far as a price I have seen on other forums people offering as low as $15 per minute, some $50, some $60 I have raised my rates since I have been doing it this for 2 years and now try to get $200 per minute right now. $1000 per minute is a very good rate and certainly not out of the realm of possibilities. It takes time, skill and good credits to get that kind of pay though. Films you may end up getting less per minute but you do a lot more music and you just give them a flat package fee. It's always a negotiation. Do everything to keep the ownership and publishing of the music because if it is good it can and should make you more money in the long run than the initial commission/fee.

    As far as the book on tape idea: the practice will be good but that will probably be all it will be for you besides making a good demo. it's hard to stay out of the way of dialogue and for a whole book on tape it would just be completely impractical. books on tape they might have intro, interludes etc that are music though.

  • The answer is that it depends on the project and what you can command, magates. If you're working for $15 a minute you're basically doing it for the experience - although I believe that you should never work for nothing; even if it's a stipend, just getting paid changes the relationship so you're treated with more respect.

  • $1000 is about right for a composer of AAA title games (the media area I have experience in - I don't know about film or TV). Some charge more (The big guys), some less (the not so big guys), but it's in that area. Keep in mind this is possible due to huge amount of money that games cost!

    Obviously if your scoring an indie film with a budget of 1% of an AAA game then you can't expect these rates.

    For that reason I think you would be very lucky if you could get even $1000 per chapter - I doubt these audio books have giant funds. Let us know how it fares.
