  • A rundown of the Performance tool would be cool

I mean.. im not sure i get how it works. Try imagine you want to do a legato peice, and explain me what you would do.. like "open this program, load this sample, do that, then convert it to that program to add effects" etc... it would be very apreciated since I dont even know if its a seperate program or if it works with another program

  • maybe even screenshots? Im clueless

    hi patriarch,
did you download the performance-tool manual from the user-area? it contains a very detailed description how to setup.
to add that: running a sequencer, performance-tool and gigastudio on the same machine requires virtual midiports to route midi from the sequencer's out to the performance-tool's in (eg. maple-port )

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • No i dident know there was such a manual online.. ill check it out.. thanks

  • Obviously im not a USER since I ask these questions [:D]

In other words I cant access online manuals I think before I have a product to register... i think

  • Playing legato is as easy as... well, playing! You load a legato patch, you set the performance tool to legato for that particular channel and you play.. It's almost magical. [;)]

  • ok... and the sequencer just records it and plays it back, just as it would anything else? Could you use the legato tool without Giga studio, or does it need GS to process the sounds? Would it work with KONTAKT? I ask cuz Im considering using KONTAKT rather than GS

  • sorry patriarch, i didn't read this from your post ...
there will be a detailed FAQ covering this question online soon

  • The performance tool, as it is right now, works as a standalone application outside of both Gigastudio, and your sequencer.

in the MIDI "signal chain" you "place" this application in between your sequencer and sampler (giga for simplicity of explanation).

This can be done on the same computer with some virtual MIDI routing tools (maple, hubi's, etc)

or you can send the MIDI output of your squencer to another computer, and then place the Performance Tool in the "signal chain" BEFORE gigastudio.

Simple setup, really. The performance tool allows you to choose your MIDI I/O.

    What the tool DOES is:

incomming MIDI is "transformed" into data that works with particular patches.

    EG: the legato patches

    I play C4 then immediately press D4

it analyzes incoming MIDI data, recognizes that I've played two notes close together (depending on the settings I set), recognizes that I've played C4 then D4, and sends the appropriate Keyswitch, program, and note data to Gigastudio to play the correct legato sample with the C4 to D4 transition.

This allows me to jsut play on the keyboard like I normally would, while the tool intelligently does all they keysiwtiching and tweaking for me IN REAL TIME.

The same goes for the repetition tool, albiet in a slightly different fashion. Again withthe auto alternator. Which are all part of the performance tools.

Now for other questions that I haven't really answered in that description.

If you understand that the tool is jsut an "interperator" for MIDI data that is in the signal chain, then you can get more of a grasp of what it is and with what it can be used.

    So,....

Kontakt. Yes. It can be sued with Kontakt. Multiple ways to do this.

Kontakt can run as a standalone app. So this is the easiest way, jsut replace the word gigastudio with Kontakt when you use it in this fashion.

In VST/DXi mode, its a bit more difficult to get going, but it can be done. It takes multiple Virtual MIDI cable routers, and a sequencer that can accept different MIDI inputs on each MIDI track. You have to route the MIDI outside of your sequencer, into the performance tool, back into your sequencer, and into the VSTi. Possible, and I've done it, but takes some general understanding of signal flow, and how your sequencer works.

All of the above should work for Halion as well. Or Vsampler, or whatever. Just so long as it supports the programming that the VSL guys have done for the gig files [;)]

  • arg ok.. complex... but I guess its nothing if one has bought the tools hehe... Im still deciding wether to go with Kontakt or Giga studio... its my impression that KONTAKT is less demanding for the computer. Also i find it appealing that diffrenet VST effects can be added, and the NKI files are easier to alter attack and release... compared to GS rather tedious "Instrument Editing"...

    any thoughts on this?

  • re: LEGATO

Complex to explain, EASY to play.

Simply put: Once its set up (and this is also EASY), you simply PLAY and it does the rest automatically. Play in a legato style with a "Performance Legato Instrument" and you will instantly hear it work. Easy as that.

Please check my mp3s I sent to you today!

  • Thanks alot Robert.. sounds great! Ive sent you an email

  • Kontakt is MORE demanding on machines than giga.

I can get about the same perforamance from Kontakt as I can from Giga, but in generaly Kontakt seems to use more CPU and RAM buffers for better performance. Which = less stuff to load. Not good for VSL [[;)]]

That said, a good computer will get you BETTER performance than giga, jsut because giga has a set limit in poly, as well if you knwo what you're doing in Kontakt you can design some amazing patches.

And as Rob said, complex to explain, easy to use.

I could say "you play the keyboard, it plays back real legato", but to me thats not a rundown [[;)]] and as anyone here that knows me I'm a techy geek, so a run down that I consider not really detailed, will be a little over the top for some [:)]

There will be future solutions for gigastudio and VST effects/routing (more than one in fact)

  • Ok... general testing with Giga and KONTAKT tells me loading times are FAR faster with KONTAKT. Loading a song takes AGES with Giga... atleast the way Ive set it up...

It also feels as if I can load more in KONTAKT than in Giga... I dunno.. I really dont know any theory behind the two programs.. only simple and not very thorough testing.. I admit.. Im a newbie...

  • generally you can load more into giga than into Kontakt. (generally)

Kontakt requires bigger buffers for good performance with disk straeming, so even in XP using 2gb (which no one's really tested and reported actual numbers with), Giga will probably be allowed to load more. this is to get reliable 160 note (80 stereo) STREAMING voices in either (with the same cheapo hardware)

Kontakt loads a lot faster in general, yup.

I believe in the long haul Giga willl always load more than Kontakt. If the runors are true about giga 3.0 then its probably safe to say it will for sure load up more.

Kontakt, however has alot of great filters and envelope controls, as well as a pretty cool synthesis engine. This engine can benefit from some of VSL's samples being used differently.

No easy answer here man. Some good, some bad. Coke or Pepsi....

if there was a Jolt cola in the sampler race, I wonder what it would be [:)]

  • Thanks King.. Great reply!

  • BTW, its also possible that the latest update of Kontakt may have shifted the balance a little. I havent had time to do some real tests. As I've been busy on three different projects at the moment. (sleep?)

I take posting as a bit of a step away from it [;)]
