  • New Mix .. comments welcome

    Hey guys.

I have mixed a new version of my Gathering Theme using Altiverb mainly .. and I'm interested to know peoples opinions. I hope you find it realistic and nice to listen to. I'm unsure about the volume level of the Choir but I guess I'm happy with how they sit. And the overall tone is supposed to be quite reverby.

If people like it I'll publish a topic on my site about what I used for Reverb settings, and other general mix information.

If not .. well I'll keep working at it [:D] Anyways .. hope you enjoy and please feel free to comment.

  • Hi Hetoreyn,

    very nice!

I donĀ“t get my mixes this good, but anyway, hereĀ“s my oppinion:

    - I think it is a little to wet.
Specially when the choir comes in. For me it sounds a little like the choir is singing in another enviroment than the rest of the orchestra. In this part the trumpet also sounds too wet.

    - When the clarinet plays at 0:06 - 0:09, it sounds like it is moving from center front to right back??? But this could be a problem of my Mackie console.

  • YEah I think you're right .. a little too wet. The main Reverb is Altiverb .. 4 instances of. Although rather than do the normal Near Middle Far and furthest .. I decided to put the strings nearer to the back. Biggest beef I always have is that in most orchestral recordings the strings sound very even and distant .. and yet in my own they always sound far too close.

So, I pulled them back. There is also a Space Designer Reverb .. using my "Hetoreyns Preset 3 - from my website if anyone wants to take a look", that covers the overall tail. All this does is helps to send the orchestra back a little bit more and extend the tail a bit. In this case the Direct sound mix was at -5db. I should set it to -2db and then it won't sound so wet.

Personally I like the trumpet sound, but as you say .. setting the reverb down a touch makes it a little more real perhaps. As for the clarinet I'm really not sure about that. It seems to be doing what I want it to and it's staying in the right place for me [:D]

I had tried to pan using Altiverb but this sounded bloody awful. Not sure what it was doing but everything sounded phased, squashed, and generally bad. So then I used Dir Mix, and the logic balance, to position .. which seemed to work better.

The Altiverb IR was the Teldex studio set.

Anyways, thanks for the comments .. anymore?

  • Hi Hetoreyn,

    me likes! [H]

I don't find it too reverby at all, you manage to get a nice, floating feel for the whole piece. Only the trumpet is really somewhat strange - far away and "big" at the same time. Maybe you can make a dedicated reverb for this solo and try to shelve off the low-end below 300 Hz for several dB.

For a true "cinemascope"-feel the mix could benefit from some dry, deep bass (frequency-wise, not the instrument), giving the whole "airy" feeling even more foundation and thus more contrast to evoke the feeling of incredible height and depth.

    HTH & all the best,

  • Nice piece! I had the same reaction as Dietz concerning the trumpet. But a very good sound overall.

  • Well, I did something very unusual with the strings and brass. The strings I used a further IR distance on .. 10 meters .. and pushed them back quite a ways .. but the Brass used a closer IR .. 7 meters .. and was more forward than the strings.

I can never seem to quite get the sense of realism in the orchestra .. that's why I tried this because it seemed to me that the distance was all wrong when you try to mix the depth layers as normal.

I have since played around with the trumpet a little and I think it now sits a little better. Will put up a new version soon.

Glad that you all have generally liked it overall though. Mixing has been killing me lately.

  • Here's an update:

Slightly different .. I assume most of you will still not like the Trumpet but in all honesty I can't do anything about it without screwing up the rest of the mix. And I rather like it myself [[:D]]

I have tried to boost the bass frequencies and I have brought down the reverb level a tiny bit. If anyones interested in this mix formula I will publish a "how to" on my site soon. This will of course be for Logic users and AV users .. but I will try to show as many settings as possible so other sequencer and reverb users can attempt to match the settings.

I think I would benefit from using something like Ozone 3 to do my final mastering with mind you .. but until I get that I'm stuck with using Logics Built in Compressor and Eq .. they're ok .. but lets face it .. there is better .. particularly for orchestral works.

So, see what you think [[:D]]
