  • For Peter Alexander

    Peter,

Please get your facts right - It possible and has been for sometime to get more than 32 instances of EXS in Logic on a Dual Mac running OSX 10.2.4, within a single song.

The preliminary tests of the G5 show that in excess of 100 instances should be possible.

Hype is one thing - facts are another.

    Regards,

  • My challenge to Apple/Emagic, as a former Emagic user and corporate supporter, is to substantiate their numbers and show step-by-step how you got to your results and conclusions, with what optimizations, and with what equipment, so it can be replicated by you, the Apple customer.

    That's fair and reasonable.

Second, I don't need Apple products. I have a PC setup for sequencing, GigaStudio, and separate VSTi computer that works, syncs to SMPTE, and does everything professionally needed of me as a professional composer in Los Angeles. So on that basis, I have no need to switch. Also, as a PC user, I have MIDIoverLAN and therefore save hundreds of dollars in avoiding hardware MIDI interfaces. When FX Teleport is completed to the point that it supports GigaStudio (hopefully starting with 2.5), I'll be able to save thousands of dollars in system expansion because I won't need audio cards in my other computers, only the sequencing master.

Third, if I did switch to the Mac, it would not be because it's the "thing to do." I would switch, or add to my current system for one of two reasons:

    1. I found myself in a situation where my colleagues were using Digital Performer I needed it for continued work;

    2. The new G5 proved that Mac-based software synths and samplers run more effectively and efficiently with both more RAM and polyphony than their PC counterparts.

Otherwise, I have a working system, the world's greatest orchestral library, and no hype. And that's a fact!

  • Hype makes the world go round, Peter, but I can tell you that the number of EXSs you have set up only becomes relevant when they're playing voices - until then they're just sitting there not doing anything! And they almost certainly got the 1000-voice polyphony by loading samples into RAM rather than streaming them. There's nothing mysterious to me about that demo.

As to comparisons with Giga machines, I posted on NS that I have 1.5GB in my EXS-running Mac and in my Giga machine, and they load almost exactly the same amount of VSL. The differences are that the XP machine is doing that in just under 800MB of RAM - which you can view as impressive for Giga or stinky for XP! - and that Giga 2.x is limited to 160 voices.

I haven't tried running a concurrent sequencer on the XP machine, but right now I think the bottom line performance is six/half a dozen.

  • There's also the Freeze command in Logic, which is useful if you've sequenced an entire part across the whole cue.

  • Nick, run out and buy it!

FYI, at Truespec, we DON'T do hype, and we WON'T do hype, as that's a disservice to the customer.

Dingaling made the claim and did the demo. Now he should post and show exactly how he got there. That's totally fair. It's called substantiation.

If that kind of practical substantiation is NOT needed by you, please call me ASAP as I have a bridge to lease crossing the Tigris and Euphrates. Great view. All mines cleared! Retired US NAVY dolphins create great ambience! Must buy.

  • I don't think I'm getting carried away by the hype, Peter! All I'm saying is that the concerns you're voicing in this thread are probably groundless. You can probably get a billion voices out of the Windows version of EXS as well if you have it - as long as the samples are in RAM.

I've also posted that I'm not rushing out to buy one of these machines yet. For one, the extended memory addressing isn't coming until Panther, the next version of OX S, comes.

But I am intersted in that bridge investment. Can you tell me some more about it? Is it shipping now?

  • Nick, I never said anything nor criticized ANYTHING about voices. I'm just saying wait 30-60 days, see how things really are, then make a purchase decision.

And that's not groundless based on Apple's history.
