  • After deleting all my TimeMachine snapshots I created enough real free space to continue the installation of the remaining additional mics (10 packages about 100 GB) of the percussion library.

Although the VSL Assistant will not start the installation if there is not enough real (so total free - purgeable) free space for the download + the installed library + some reserve available it does use the purgeable space during installation:

    • I started with 340 GB free of which 309 GB purgeable where I could not install a further additional mics package
    • After deleting the TimeMachine snapshots the purgeable was reduced to 285 GB purgeable and I could install packages one-by-one
    • After installing the 10 packages I now have 241 GB free with only 1.98 GB purgeable.

So overall the remains free space seems correct and the purgeable file space has been used. How the purgeable space became so high during the updates of the standard version, which I assume overwrite existing sample files with the new smaller ones, might be investigated.

I'd just as soon not post a new thread, this is close enough a topic.
So after buying a percussion library in the current sale, all my Synchron Percussion wants to be updated.
but I haven't seen notes on most of it saying what the update does; what I have seen is years ago. Do they really require an update to work properly? Unfortunately where I live at the moment provides wifi but it's throttled, with a ceiling of around 650kps.

What I need to know is, for example Synchron Cymbals and Gongs II is 30 GB install size; does the update require I have that much space available? Because I don't have enough for more than a couple like this. As an experiment I clicked on update for all of what's indicated to need an update and by the time I chose Synchron Harps, a size in megabytes, it balked saying there wasn't enough space to download. Initially the target was the default downloads directory on my system drive and it definitely has enough space, but no which is weird.

I can see why the next target, my external samples drive, wouldn't, because the Synchron Percussion things if they have to install in full have wiped out the space.

Probably doing it one at a time (my normal M.O.) will work as I suppose the old files vanish. So are those overwritten during installation in a way that doesn't require I've reserved all that space, or what? Forgive my naivety.

    what the update does

The updates for Synchron Percussion are to shrink the size to around 1/4 or 1/3 of the original size via lossless compression. If you don't want to make the libraries smaller so that you have more disk space than before, you don't have to update.

  • Thank you. I'd hoped for that and presumed it from what I've seen. What I need to know is basically does it shrink them during installation, as opposed to during installation is it temporarily requiring enough space for both old and new.

I'm not sure about that, but again, you can do it piece by piece. For instance, start with the smallest one to begin with an update that, even if it needs two copies of that you should still hopefully have enough to update the whole thing. That will free up enough space for you to update the next larger one, then proceed in that way.

I had the same question how the update function would handle the old and the new samples. I have been told by VSL support that the Vienna Assistent will exchange the samples. It is not that both samples are installed in parallel, the old samples get deleted automatically before.

I have the standard libs and would also like to update to the newer smaller ones, but though getting newsletters, I have not been informed that it is my turn. So unfortunately, I cannot confirm the behavior. In case that you might take part in the sales action, you might be able to download immediately - they say -, might be an option as I was thinking to upgrade to the full lib.

I saw 'not enough space to...' enough times to delete some things. Currently this is a total nightmare.
The download for one thing, the stereo mics portion was at 99 if not 100% and V.E. hung. Restarting the download has to verify what's there, which does not reflect where I was. And the verification, 5 or 6 times now gets to 15% and starts over at 0. I've been at this for about 4 hours today, longer last night, and I have gotten nowhere. It hung yesterday at the point installation begins, I force quit it and I watched the entirety of the download vanish in Finder.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled V.A three times now.

I bought something - just the standard - yesterday. This is the one that was finished downloading - in Finder there was a .info - and about to start installation. Bells II which I hoped to be working with last night. 24 hours later I am nowhere.

And V.A. says, this with 134GB left on the drive, there isn't enough space at the target directory on that drive for the less than 10GB download for Bells II. At one point it reported there was 11GB available with about the same amount I report above. This is one of the times I uninstalled/reinstalled it.

Yeah, that's my strategy at this point. Vienna Assistant is struggling. This hanging at 99 or 100% is killing me.

  • The instability was probably the poor connection. I had to buy xfinity hotspots and this one is ~6x faster than the stupid throttled connection.

  • Well, after an installation of an update, there's more space on the drive and it looks like no problem. V.A. however is being weird and saying things that aren't true. At one point it showed a library under both Installed and Not Installed and just reported a fatal error on something which was fully installed, which loads and works perfectly.

The most likely reason is if only parts of a library are installed, for example, ONLY Standard or ONLY Additional Mic positions. Then, the library will show up under both Installed and Not Installed, which allows users to find it under both categories and click on the product for more details.

Thanks for your attention. No, I don't have the additional mics for this one. Trying to make V.A. see the thing made it hang every time so I gave up on it.

Anyway this all worked out, I have gained around 200GB on the drive.
