  • Dimension Brass 1 vs Brass 1

I am trying to decide between purchasing Dimension Brass 1 or Brass 1. I have a very good solo trumpet and solo trombone as well as solo Vienna horn but I am in need of very good trumpet, horn and trombone ensembles. I already own Dimension Strings 1 and am quite comfortable working with the Dimension concept. Please weigh in with your opinions and thank you.

  • Of all my VSL I am most happy with Dimension Brass. The a4 (and a8) horns, a3 (and a6) trumpets and a3 trombones from the SE aren't that far off when doing unison stuff and that would apply to Brass I as well. Dim. Brass really shines at divisi of course. They work for solo passages as well, but unfortunately you sometimes get some bleed from the other players. Having said that, I still think they sound better for solos than the triple and viennese horns. I have VSL SE, Dim. Brass and a few instruments from Brass I & II. I wouldn't really have any issue using just Dim. Brass most of the time. The only thing lacking would be the basses since the Low Brass has a lot of bleed and feels more meant to be played as a tutti. This means a bass trombone and a tuba would be needed if you need detailed brass bass lines. This is all my own opinions of course!

  • Thank you - and you have also answered some specific questions I had regarding the bleed, particularly with the tuba and bass trombone. The standard libraries for those 2 solo instruments are very reasonable - approximately $50 each I believe - so if I decide I need more detail and control with the low brass, that is a good solution. Thanks again for your detailed reply - it was most helpful.
