On the project I am currently working on, I feel it needs some low end, so I decided to add a timpani fast rythym. Unfortunately, it does not sound right. Muddy and not integrated. Same for taiko... Not sure what parameters to tweak so it sounds clear and well integrated in the mix.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Without an audio example of your intermediate results, the parameter settings you used, and (ideally) a reference track to demonstrate what you actually want to achieve it is hard to give meaningful advice.

Interestingly, an old trick I learned from my Pop music days seems to work quite well with orchestral percussion and that is parallel compression. It really kind of makes it all jump out of the mix and of course you can adjust to your fancy. Also, a pinch of distortion for good measure.
The only thing is to eq out the low end on the reverb otherwis mind the mud splattering🌩️
