  • Tutorial Presets

I have Cubase 4, SE bundle & Vienna suite. This is probably a stupid question but what do I do with the .FXP files that come with some of the demo tutorials? I presume I have to place them somewhere to be picked up by Cubase, and I also presume they are Audio track inserts. But I am not sure. So what do these files do, where are they used, and where are they placed in order to use them? I am not a novice to sequencing, but I am not an expert either, so please assume a full explanation is required.

  • Hello Bachman!

Which fxp-files are you refering to precisely?
If you are talking about the Special Edition Tutorial Files or Inspiration Presets, there's no need to load any fxp files as everything is included with the Cubase project files. As far as I know, there are no fxp-files included anyway.

  • Hi Andi!

    Sorry if I wasn't clear.

If you go to DVD instruments, solo strings 1, audio demos, and select

Strinq Quartet op 59/3 Finale by Ludwig van Beethoven,

you get a pop up screen with 2 buttons - download MP3 AND download tutorial.

Downloading  the tutorial gets you a .ZIP file containg the midi AND 4 .FXP files for each instrument of the string quartet.

Hence my question.  I recognize the .FXP  extension in preset files for Halion3, but I have no idea where to place these .FXP tutorial files in Cubase and how to use them - although I am hoping they contain information about the settings for Vienna Instruments and/or Vienna suite that created that demo.

  • Hello Bachman!

Fxp files are not only presets for Halion, but this is a general preset file format for VST plugins. Also the Vienna Instruments presets are saved in this format. To be able to load them, please copy them to your VSL Custom Data folder. They can then be loaded in the Vienna Instruments player under Preset Select.

  • Hello again,

I copied them into that folder and they did appear as presets in VI Pro, but the matrixes they loaded were odd.  Very few notes actually played - and then they wouldn't play again.  I think those presets have some sort of compatibility problem -  the presets in those folders all have extensions .vipreset.  Unless you can tell me what is happening, it is probably best I don't leave those presets in that folder.

  • These presets have the Learn function turned on in order to save RAM. This means that only the samples included in the MIDI file can be played. If you want to hear all samples of all loaded patches, just reset the Learn function. But please be aware, that you will need lots of RAM for that.

Everything works as expected on my machine. There is no compatibilty problem that I am aware of. Did you assign the tracks in Cubase to the right channels?

The extension .fxp is (amongs others) for VI presets. The extension .vipreset is for VI Pro presets.

  • I apologise if this is a stupid question, but is there a way of loading the instruments and all the information into Logic?

    Regards,

    Roy

  • Hello Roy!

Yes, just copy the fxp-files to your VSL Custom Data folder. In Logic you can load the MIDI file and open Vienna Instruments (Pro) or Vienna Ensemble (Pro). The presets can then be loaded by the Vienna Instruments (Pro) player.

  • A followup question. I have loaded the .fxp presets into a demo I have opened in digital performer (9). I have made changes to one of the presets because I wanted to substitute a different instrument. The original .fxp is for Basset Horn. I don't own that instrument, so I substituted Bb clarinet. I was able to match the articulations. So I saved this as a new preset which saved as .viprest. This all was an experiment that has failed. No sound from the clarinet instrument at all. Although I can see the data lighting up in the mixer and can see the keyboard working in the VIP window. ---- FOLLOWUP: After considerable experimentation I discovered a CC12 problem with the clarinet track. I'm not really sure what CC12 refers to in this case, but I increased the values of that data here and there through the sequence and lo and behold, the clarinet is now audible. Steep learning curve for me.
