  • Program change vs Key switch

I’m kind of late to the party, just now starting to set up my template in VI Pro. We know program changes are now an option to use for changing patches. I’m wondering if (and how) you all might be using this new feature? Pro’ & Cons? [B]

  • seems like to me the idea of using program changes is tied to the use of VST expressions [which sends them to the instrument, transformed from keyswitches]? I might use them to switch matrices because it's a lane below, and not a dot in the piano roll to complicate that editor visually.

  • I have been using program changes since many years

I was converting program changes to keyswitches in the Environment of Logic

    Pro :

This does not screw up the score with false note

you see what articulation you are in(you dont need to remember what not is what)

if you start in the middle of the piece you are in the right articulation

    Cons :

the problem is that Logic only prints the name of the 1st program change on the score

write to Apple so they fix this !!!!!

  • I don’ use the Score editor (in Logic) to view notes, so having the key switches at the extremes doesn't bother my view. I never used the "chase midi" thing but see its advantages when starting playback in the middle of phrases. The program change feature would let me create the same 30-50 key switches for all the instruments, but the chase feature wouldn’t work (I imagine).

Thanks for you input. I’d love to read lots more! [B]

    Program changes is "chased"

You dont have the same keyswiches for each instrument, that is why it is good to use prg changes

  • So program changes (PC) are "chased"? That’s great!. Since you can’t see the PC like a key switch (in the Piano Roll window), does refering to the event list slow you down?

It’s true that the different instruments have slightly different articulations, but I’m thinking about using the same areas on a dedicated midi keyboard for similar types of articulations (6 keys for all the short notes, 6 keys for all the cresc., etc.).

  • I dont use Piano Roll, only score and event list

also dont forget there are a lot of articulation and they can be around a-0,1,2 or after 5

also some ks are missing in some instruments (to make you buy the above collection) this make a lot to remember
