  • VSL House Style Sibelius 6

I was surprised to see the dynamic levels created in the playback dictionary by this House Style. pp = 20, and ppp = 1.

Why do the soft dynamics have such a steeply descending curve? Has research shown something about our perceptual curves? Is is something about the interaction between Sibelius and VSL?

So far I am finding the results pretty interesting, but it is such a big change that I can't help but wonder why it was made.

  • Hi Randall!

We didn't record articulations in ppp. So if you want to play softer than pp, it will have to be a pp-sample played as soft as possible and that is achieved with velocity 1. If the difference to pp was smaller, you would not hear much difference between ppp and pp.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • The ppp makes sense to me now, and I only use that for sustained sounds in quiet moments anyway. I am still a bit surprised that the percentage drops run like this starting from mf: mf -13% = mp; mp -13% = p; p -26% = pp. I suspect that this is simply what subjectively seemed to work best in order to have pp sound really soft, but it looks surprising on paper.
