  • VEPRO and iTunes conflict? I might be crazy but....

Okay, this may be nuts but I had posted an earlier thread about issues with VEPRO audio drop outs and hung notes when running on the host machine. In my case it a MacPro 8 Core. But in the past 3 days I've discovered that after I have shut my machine down for a few minutes, reboot that everything is fine. That is, until I start iTunes. This is when I start to get audio glitches and hung notes. This ONLY happens running VEPRO on the MacPro (the host machine). All of the satellite computers are operating fine - glitch free.

As an example; last night I shut the MACPRO down, booted up this morning and worked for about 4 hrs with no issues. I then opened up iTunes and started to get some glitches.

Now, it may be totally coincidence but I've done this a few times now and every time it has happened. If anyone can tell me why or more importantly, why this possibly couldn't be the reason, let me know.

In the mean time, I won't be using iTunes on my host machine!

    Thanks,

    Rob

  • I had the same problem in the past but its not related to VSL. What audio interface are you using. Try sending you system audio output (in the audio preference pane) to the built-in output. If you need it,  you just have to plug it in the audio interface physically. I had this problem with my Apogee ensemble and a Motu 828MKIII. One other thing who might help, it is good to have a dedicated firewire port for your audio interface.

  • Hey Fred,

    Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, I wasn't sure how the two would be related...just a shot in the dark. This whole "glitching," "hanging notes" thing is very frustrating and counter productive.

I'm using the MOTU 2408 with the PCIe-424 card. So, it is a dedicated firewire interface. SO, I'm assuming that the firewire port into the PCI card is dedicated.

I will make sure that the system audio is being sent out the built-in output.

If you can think of anything else I would certainly appreciate it!

  • Rob, do you ever notice the audio output of iTunes or any other multimedia app begin to crackle when you're DAW's open, almost like there's a sync problem?  I have just about the exact same setup as you and I've noticed a few similar problems with multimedia apps and the 2408.  I avoid them like the plague whenever my DAW's fired up.

  • That's so funny that you mentioned that because I do run into that problem frequently...I actually had that same problem when I was running my G5.

I did just assign my "system sounds" to the built-in outputs so we'll see if that helps anything.

  • Okay, I'm at a total loss...it's not iTunes after all...I've switched the system sounds output to "built-in output"....I'VE EVEN PRAYED TO THE AUDIO GODS!!!

Nothing seems to work...I have audio glitches and hung notes no matter what. Anyone, anyone at all have any ideas...I'm right in the middle of a big Disney project and I'm losing so much time "futzing" around with this.

VSL software team, if you have any suggestions at all please share.

MACPro 8 Core, 32 gigs of Ram, Snow Leopard, Digital Performer 7.02, VEPro on this machine running LASS (all of my VSL instruments are run on satellite computers and I'm experiencing NO problems with them).

    Thanks,

    Rob

  • I remember when i had this problem, it was when i open a quicktime movie (in DP or standalone) or any other app who use the audio output. Now i'm on Logic and no problem. I think it's definetly a clock problem. When switching the sample rate it was ok.

Intersesting...what exactly do you mean by "When switching the sample rate it was ok."

What did you switch? Incidentally, I'm running everything at 48k.

    Thanks Fred!

  • Just by switching from 44k to 48k and back to 44k. Just to resyncronized.

  • Same here, whenever the pops and clicks, start usually just restarting the audio engine (or quiting the offending app) seems to return everything to normal.  btw, it's not only when my DAW's fired up, I've noticed the same type of issues when I have itunes open and I'm doing some editing in Kontakt standalone.  I asked MOTU about it a while back and they didn't know what to make of it.

  •  I wonder if any of this could be related to graphics/driver? I've had "interface" crackles since installing a new video card with nvidias latest geforce drivers. Just a suggestion.

Interesting thought, but I've had this problem with the "stock" Mac vid card. This MacPro does the same thing and I have no secondary cards installed
