    I have a quite simple discussion topic here, and thought it would be interesting to se some of your opinions...

    I currently mix all of my compositions at 48khz sampling rate, and I am wondering what sort of difference it would make if I mixed and rendered everything at 96khz... I mean, it can't be that different, but I hear people all of the time recommending that I have a soundcard that can process things at 96khz...

    So, I guess I'm asking for some light on the subject, as far as getting a good orchestral mix. Do I really have to consider the sampling rate?

    I know that higher sampling rate means higher quality, but is there really an audible difference? Would random listeners who knew nothing about mixing be able to tell the difference?

    please correct me if i am wrong, but raising the sample rate to 96Khz, would not give any increase in quality at all, unless the sample library is recorded and release in that same sample rate, right?

    Most sample libs are recorded (or delivered) in 44.1 Khz, so when you work in the 48 Khz realm, you are asking your sampler(s) to "upsample". This may in fact give detoriation due to the processing involved. It will also require additional CPU resources in your sampler. So, unless you deliver music to AV-clients, I would work with 44.1 Khz.

    Going to higher rates will not improve the sound of the samples themselves, but may result in subtle processing improvements.

    Some mastering engineers actually upsample the raw mixes, do the mastering in 88.2 or 96 and finally downsample (and dither).

    But, this all comes with quite an increase in processing resources and disk space. Personally I would chose to work in 44.1 and do mastering in 44.1 / 32 bit FP. I experimented with mastering in 88.2 Khz but I don't believe I can really hear any serious improvement. But that may be due to the noisy/bombastic nature of my music 😉

    peter, this was related to the merge of forum and user area databases (to provide a single login) and we couldn't identify and merge your both accounts because of different email addresses ... done now
